I had the right (passenger's side) windshield replaced this morning. Sometime between the last Saguaro Jetset Rally and leaving for the Shawnee rally, an apparent small rock chip turned into a 10" long crack. When we got home from Shawnee, Kathy contacted RV Glass Solutions, the company Jim Bounds recommends, and they took it from there. They contacted our insurance company (we have full glass coverage), and then contacted me. A local company, Windshields Arizona, was sent out to do the installation. This all took place over a period of about eight days. The installation went well and, other than the fact that they were late for the appointment, I am extremely satisfied.

What a difference! The right side looks as if there is no glass in it from the inside. I guess I'll just have to hope for another crack in the left windshield. That or shell out the cash for a new one without the insurance paying for it. Confused

Thats some good info. What insurance company do you use? I made sure I carried glass coverage as well. It added like a few bucks per quarter to my policy. I use Progressive.

I have State Farm - they replaced a cracked windshield for free - including the new rubber seal around both.

Carl,
Did you also replace the gasket and lock strip?

No, The old gasket was in really good condition. Plenty flexible. They had a new one with them just in case. I guess I could have insisted they replace it, but I'm a little too easy to get along with. There were some minor cracks in the corners that they sealed. I was just happy to get the new glass. If I get the driver's side replaced, I'll make sure they replace the gasket and spline then.

How hard is it to get these windshields? I know I see them on our known vendors sites, but by calling a glass company how do they get them?

The windshields are available, and are stocked at various sites around the country. JimBounds has a company that he recommends for the installation, but I had a local fellow do the install when I replaced my cracked windshield and he seemed to have no problems installing the windshield into the old rubber surround.

I think JimK has them for a fair price. Shipping is a huge expense on something this large and fragile.

johnL455 and I were lucky enough to find some on eBay that were located here in the Chicago area, but I think it would be easier to use the vendors. Supposedly, there are two suppliers for these windshields, and one is supposed to be. Easier to install than the other. Sorry I don't have the names, but someone on the list may know which brand to get.

Installing a gasket involves removing BOTH windshields at the same time. In most cases it makes more sense to reuse the old gasket since it has already has taken a set to the contour or the coach. If you are only replacing one windshield then you definitely want the reuse the old gasket. It is difficult to pull the second windshield without breaking it. I would say you have a 50% chance of it coming out without cracking it.

In the 50 or so GMCs (including the 13 at the GMCMI Goshen rally) that they done over the years (I have seen most of them) only once did I see saw them replace the gasket.

If you are intent on replacing the gasket be sure that the insurance company knows ahead of time so they can add the additional $250 or to the estimate. Also some insurance companies will make you pick up the bill for the gasket by declaring is unnecessary or a normal wear item. Just be sure before you have the work done.

Replacing the lock bead is a different issue. It is removed during the installation process and is easily replaced. The guys we have locally do these has done enough of them that he stocks the lock bead by the roll. It only adds about $10.00 or $15.00 to the bill. It also can be easily replaced at a later date if necessary.

Many people have had a complaint of slight dripping of water directly over the steering wheel prior to having their windshields replaced. There is a seam in the fiberglass at that point causing a slight lump where the gasket slides over it.

Our installation guys use urethane to seal the entire top of the gasket to the body and also along the sides between the gasket and the side windows. Also they go inside the gasket and seal between the windshield and the gasket with urethane. Make sure whomever you have doing yours does this BEFORE installing the lock bead. It only takes about 10 or 15 minutes extra time and two or 3 tubes of standard automotive Urethane.

One other warning. If you or a PO has ever tried to seal the windshield with Silicone then Urethane will not stick to the body. The above work will have to be done with black silicone instead of Urethane.

This is slightly off topic but concerns the window gasket. My gasket does not leak but seems to oxidize rapidly. Every time I wash the windows or the whole GMC the gasket bleeds black and transfers the black to what every I'm using to wash with. Is there something I should "seal" it with or is this bleeding normal?
