Just resurrecting this old thread...I bought a Wilson Sleek as a result of this discussion, and I can attest that it works as advertized. I am currently sitting in Bonita Canyon Campground at Chiricahua National Monument recovering from a 4-1/2 mile hike, using my smartphone as a 'wifi hotspot' There were NO bars on the phone until I put it in the amplifier cradle, and two bars with it in. This location is 37 miles from the nearest town of any size (Willcox, AZ.) and is known for NO cell service, except for some isolated spots high in the mountains. We are situated in a canyon, with no visual contact with the outside world, and this Wilson Sleek is managing to pull in a signal. Pics in Facebook under my name (Carl Stouffer).

That's impressive! Who is your wireless carrier?

Gary Berry wrote on Sun, 20 May 2012 07:19 | Hey Dan;
When someone calls me (or I call out) and the iPhone is in the
Wilson Sleek cradle I just hit the speaker button on the iPhone.
Easier than holding it to my ear.

You beat me to it, Gary. That is exactly what I did when I got a couple of calls from my sons. I plan to use the Wilson mostly for my phone tether, but it is a bit cumbersome answering phone calls on it.
