Sandy Klaus brought me an iPad with WiFi for xmas. I hadn't wanted one so set about finding things it could do.
I found a number of applications for traveling that would show me campsites, hot spots, gas stations and more. Problem is, they are all overlaid on top of Google Maps and Google Maps doesn't download. That means I'd need to be connected to use them. Even the WiFi hot spot locator requires me to first be at a wifi hotspot. Go figure.
I don't have a smartphone. Don't want a smartphone. Don't want to pay $50/month either.
Any options?

star bucks. get wired both body and mind.
I have looked at this same design problem. Jail breaking an iphone that plugs into your ipad
is how a lot of people do it. but it is really $75 a month just for the phone internet wide band, and a wire to your ipad.
Lists of wifi is the only way. It seems. I pay the $75 a month but it saves me this much in gas checking
traffic around l.a. as i do my airport shuttle business and charters. If i go around traffic jams i save this much in gas
even though i have cng at $2.15 a gallon and get the same millage as gas on my dodge vans. If anyone has a way
better i need the answers as well, thank you for asking we all have this problem. Internet interring while driving.
On the internet highway again, on the road again. How do they do it on these music tour buses with endless budgets.
How does bob dylan go on the internet from his tour bus. To be or not to be that is the question, on the internet. That is.
to vote for the black berry or the iphone? To do more with less. to spend less and get the most from coast to coast.
Back to work have a good day all.

Sounds to me like you want an offline maps app - maybe this will help?

Howdy all.. new to the group and to the GMC community!
I have the Virgin MiFI Card
http://www.virginmobileusa.com/mobile-broadband/mifi-2200.html
Its using the Sprint 3G Network.. so not super fast...
3G Internet At Home or On The Go
No Contract, No Overages & No Activation Fees
Nationwide Sprint® 3G Network
Only Pay for What You Need
Change Plans as Your Needs Change
The plans are pretty neat for part time mobile internet.
NO CONTRACTS.. (which is a big selling point for me)
$10/10 days @ 100 MB
$20/month @ 500 MB
$50/month @ UNLIMITED DATA
You can connect up to 5 (FIVE) wifi devices to it.. it acts like an wifi router in your house.
so your iPhone, your iPads, your laptops, etc can connect to it all at the same time!
Some down sides..
its DATA RATE limited for the $10 and $20 plans..
which means, if you try to stream NETFLIX movies, you will drain it
really quick.. maybe a movie or two. but should be perfect for emails,
and browsing the web. just keep an eye on picture downloads..it will
drain your data fast too..
COVERAGE
I use Sprint on my Iphone, and in the major cities on the west coast, its been great.
Traveling to ZION national park in Utah 2 years ago, reception wasnt very good on Sprint.
Verizon seems to have a HUGE part of the USA covered.. and its also what they advertise.. no other companies seem to be challenging them either..
it also seems like they cover all those little rinky dinky towns out in no where.. which is most likely when you might NEED mobile internet.
Where to BUY a Virgin Mifi Card
I got mine on Craigslist for $40
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/search/?areaID=7&subAreaID=&query=virgin+mifi&catAbb=sss
but they range all over the board..
I met my seller at a VIRGIN mobile brick and mortar location. And i made sure i can "activate" the device using my info, paid for a $10 top up, I changed the passwords etc, and connected to my laptop.. once the laptop connected, he got his $40.
My current choices are:
Virgin Mifi - cheap and very short term plans.. might not be the best coverage.
Verizon Mifi - more expensive, and they claim to cover out of the way areas. which might be needed for adventuring outside of big cities..
Campground Wifi - hopefully its free with full hookups..
McDonalds - i believe all have free Wifi
Starbucks Coffee - i believe all have FREE wifi..
almost any coffee shop (at least from my experience in So Cali), seem to have free wifi.
oh yea..im going to casa!! see you guys there!

Glenn,
It sounds like what you have is the WiFi-only iPad. That means, no cellular
modem or GPS receiver.
Since Google Maps are downloaded so they are always up-to-date, you'll
always need a WiFi connection. (Sorry, Charlie, real tuna costs money).
The WiFi locator serves as an aid to the GPS receiver to quickly get you in
a zone of probably location in the even three GPS receivers can't be located
so quickly. Since you have no GPS receiver (if my assumption is correct) you
then must be logged into a WiFi hotspot so that Google Maps can give you a
relatively accurate location. Note that the term is "relatively".
So, you don't want a smartphone. Your choice. It sounds as though you WiFi
iPad is to be used, mainly, for email and internet browsing while near a
hotspot.
There are some travel apps that will download information to the iPad so
having connectivity isn't always the issue. Those apps are more rare than
the ones that depend on an active location.
With a laptop and mapping software you typically have to update the maps on
a quarterly subscription basis.
You see, the issue is that it takes money to keep the world going round.
Obama can't solve that problem regardless of what others may say. And, of
course, the TEA Party won't either.

Nobody mentioned MacDonalds.
They all have free wifi and it works pretty well. I don't have a smart phone- i travel with a laptop and MacD takes care of all my needs.
