Some time ago here there was discussion of a GMC that had, while new, had been badly damaged in the upper section. It had been sold to a highly skilled metalworker who re did it. It reportedly had a very "square" appearance at the top. It also had a lot more upper storage room because of the "squareness". This is just what I recall. No claim to accuracy. I suspect there is someone here who may have the details if this is that unit.

Ah there it is !!!
I just ran across my pictures of it yesterday!
It was for sale in Dallas two years ago, April/May 2010. It was checked out and driven here from San Diego? not too long before that ...I think without checking back.
I would have to go back and dig up the emails to get specific about it. But it is a known GMC, by some here on the net. A brand new one that was driven into something that ripped the top off on delivery. Not offered to the public, the dealer fabricated the top and used it, or something like that.
Actually not a bad coach at all, the wrought iron railing balcony and the pvc roof rack not withstanding. The outside is not faded as much as most untouched GMC's.
I didn't pay much attention to the inside, standard GMC/RV stuff. I was still looking for a real GMC! I wonder if I thought to get the TZE?
I have seven pictures of the outside if anyone wants me to post them.

Slightly off topic, but do you think if GMC had of produced them in this shape would any of you want one? would the group be as large as it is? I don't think I would. to me the roundness is what I like and yes even the lack of storage because of it.

Just in case anyone really cares.
I did go dig out the msgs of actual inspections and the link to Wersal's posting of 48 photos. Should be interior shots in there.
btw Randy called it fugly back then

" Mystery explained. It is/was a '77 Palm Beach.

Spent it's youth in Northern Nevada and AZ. Lost it's top from a fire and was rebuilt with a handmade alum roof, rear, and upper front. The pvc roof rails and wrought iron rear porch rails are "unique". And the overall look is ?
But the rest is OK. Well made, nice real wood cabinets, roof does not leak. All the maintenance has just been done; brakes, rear bearings, belts, hoses. Two major trips in Jan and Feb, Kingman, AZ to Dallas. Dallas to Daytona and return without incident. Air bags look great and don't leak, but the system is inoperable. And the steering column elec functions have been replaced by a pair of vice grips and an assortment of buttons and switches.
Wersal should be looking at it now and should be able to give an experienced appraisal.

Coach burned while still at the dealership. The guy that rebuilt it bought
it from the dealership and took it to his shop where he rebuilt the top
half, rear and interior. This was a one owner coach until the present owner
bought it last January. In some of the pictures you can see some of the
thousands of rivets it is put together with. The rebuilder made several
modifications. Just to mention a few. He shortened the depth of
refrigerator cabinet and added storage on the bath side of the refrigerator.
Installed a larger water tank under the couch. Moved the water heater into
the lower left side of the closet and installed a Dometic Heater in place of
the Solair unit. The dash area in front of the driver is still pretty much
original but the rest of the dash area has been modified. It appears to have
the original 403 engine and 66036 miles on it. He made several modifications
to the electrical system. Example: the converter is now in a cabinet above
the passengers seat. House fuses above the driver. Marine type battery
selector in the glove box area. In one of the pictures there appears to be
water damage on the ceiling above the bed near the closet. I asked about it
and was told a vent was left open and water got in. It is on the open side
of a roof vent. Every thing an original GMC had appears to still be there. A
lot of it is now in a different place. Some times there appears more storage
other times less. Just depends on where your looking. To say the least I
found it an interesting coach. A little different than we are use to but
probably very usable.
Charles
It was not re-built in a GMC factory. An individual did the re-build. I
understand he owed some kind of a shop that did metal work and heating and
airconditioning. Your close enough you should go and look at it. I found it
well worth the time. You will never see another one like it.

I'd call it a 'Wetumpka Special', having grown up in Prattville. (For the Teeming Millions, Wetumpka is a small nondescrept town North and marginally East of Montgomery, AL. The name stems from an old Alabamo Indian word meaning "Social Disease")
