[GMCnet] Towing Requirements [message #164923] |

I have the printed out the two pages (61 & 62) of the 1976 owner manual
pertaining to towing.
It appears that some VERY specialized equipment is required for safe
towing of one of these coaches.
I suspect a decent towing company would have a spreader bar and some
equivalent of the rubber pad shown in the illustration, BUT the
various spacer block assemblies and wood block are probably special.
Would a dolly arrangement be okay for the front wheels?
Would what they term a "roll-back" be the preferred method?
I had permission to leave the coach at the RV dealer (towables only)
where I nursed it on Friday afternoon, but need to get it SOMEWHERE
before their close of business on Monday.

Hi
You could use a wheel lift truck or a rollback. If you call for a wheel
lift you will need to let them know the front end weighs between 5000 and
6000 pounds.
Pump up the air bags so the rear doesn't drag.
I have a friend that had his towed from Spokane, WA to Kelowna, BC with a
medium duty International truck so you don't need a great big tandem truck
to do the job.

Mac,
Google shows at least two mobile RV mechanics in Okla City. Might be worth calling them and asking about installing the belts you lost.
I'm surprised the rv dealer where you are parked cannot replace fan belts.

Thanks, Rob and others for the info and advice. I have
printed out your "Eastern States" article.
If I can find a mobile tech who will do the belts
tomorrow, I'll do that. Otherwise I'll specify a wheel
lift capable of 6,000 pounds for a front end tow to an
as yet undetermined shop.
On top of all this, I have a cardiologist appointment
in the morning!

Mac,
No doubt Rob's instructions mention it -- but be sure to inflate the air bags to near maximum height, if you use a front wheel lift truck..

I just re-read the towing document and I have absolutely NO idea where the
hell I got; "14. Confirm with the tow vehicle driver that the tow vehicle
has at least 8,000 lbs. capacity."
Byron, when you get time would you please revise that step to read:
"14. Confirm with the tow vehicle driver that the tow vehicle has the
capacity to lift a vehicle with a Front Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
of 5000 pounds and a GVWR of 13,000 pounds."
Those figures are slighty more than the FRONT GVWR 4,200 and GVWR 12,500 as
noted in the Operators Manuals.

I think you will find most GMC 26' motorhomes weigh about 2000 pounds per
tire for a front end weight closer to 4000 pounds. If it weighed 6000 pounds
on the front it would exceed the rating of the tires.

I just re-read this message and I screwed up the revision! DAMN!
It should read:
