I'm getting ready to drop the waste tank. I've waited all winter since I got the Palm Beach last fall, to fill it up and test the pump, water lines, and waste. Wouldn't you know all the easy stuff works fine, but there's a nice slow drip coming out between the dump valve and the tank. Here's some pics: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=43581&title=waste-outlet&cat=all

It looks like it has a nice bead of door and window caulk all around it, and the caulking cracked, and that's where the leak is coming from. I can see the sending unit looks on the verge to crumble, too.

The good thing, is that this coach hasn't had fresh waste in it in a few years, so getting dreaded shower won't be a problem. I put a few gallons of fresh water in it to test.

I've read a couple threads on the valve and this problem before. I also have a macerator that came with the coach, along with a variety of hoses that looks like the PO was using the macerator with a twist lock adapter pump out tank through the normal dump line. That's a too "hands on" for me, Shocked , so I'll use this opportunity to do a dual outlet.

Any advice or lessons learned are welcome. Thanks.

Galen, Here is my take on waste tank repairs. It has been my experience
that the plastic tanks are ALL "aged out" and are brittle. There are some
adhesives that will make temporary repairs on them, but often times, they
will crack somewhere else, often when they are full of waste. That rapidly
becomes an unfunny situation to work on. If you have to drop the Black
tank, inspect the flange where the tank mounts to the floor. They are
usually cracked along that junction. Replacement tanks are available at
modest cost, and there are some improvements in plastics in the last 35
years or so since yours were made. There are many variations due to year
models and who upfitted the coach. If you have a Royale, they were upfitted
by Coachman Industries and are the most different styles that one can
imagine. I have worked on several different ones, and am presently working
on one that will require full replacement from the toilet to the waste dump
hose. In my experience, when a new tank is fitted, new waste valves and
drain plumbing is not a bad idea, particularly when a mascerator is fitted.
I prefer to retain both the 3" dump along with the mascerator dump, but I
am a belt and suspenders kind of guy. Your experience may vary.

You probably know to remove the toilet and disconnect the shower and sink inlets.. The toilet inlet on mine screwed into the black tank -- I made this tool to make it a little easier.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=37671&title=0067&cat=5690

Use an 18 or so inch of plywood with a floor Jack to lower and raise the tank.
It's not heavy but awkward.

A photo of my tank -- there are a few others in the same album.

Here is how I did the macerator

Good luck,

I am with Jim on this. Fix it once and be done with it. A new one is not that expensive. We always have one at the conventions so folks can see how the new ones are made and to save someone shipping.

Galen,

I forgot to mention -- plan to use vise grips to hold the four rod hangers for the tank support brackets while you loosen the nuts.

Yes they do. Well worth the price, is my opinion.
