Does anyone know of a qualified GMC Motor Home mechanic in Las Vegas?
The place that has my newly acquired 1976 coach has had it for three
months and they told me today that they don't know when they will be
able to get to it. Apparently it needs a fuel pump and tune-up in order
to be road worthy enough to make the 250-mile trip from Las Vegas up
here to Ely where I live. I can have it towed to anywhere in the area if
necessary.

Thanks in advance.

I can not help you on who to take it to. But if it is the mechanical pump then it is a 1/2 to 1 hour job. There are only two bolts holding it in place and only two lines to remove and replace. You could do it yourself with a cheap set of 3/8" sockets and a cheap set of open end / box end wrenches. Both set together at Harbor Freight will cost you less than $25.00.

You did not state what year the coach is so I have no idea what a tune up will entail. It's probably not much more that replacing spark plugs if they are really needed and maybe the carb filter.

Check the Black List and see if there is anyone locally in LV that
could point you in the right direction.

Give us the name of the place so we NEVER accidentally pull in there
looking for service.

In the three months you've been waiting, I could have walked to Vegas, made
your repairs, driven to Ely and hitchhiked home to Nova Scotia.

You're off to an unfortunate start, but don't get discouraged ! Do you
know what the Black List is or where to find it ? You will get help there.

Dave,
There's nothing exotic about the GMC engine. Straight forward 454, still reasonably common. Any decent mechanic should be more than able to deal with your stuff. Plugs, points, rotor, cap, filters, fuel pump. All routine. Best bet, look for a guy over 50.

Contact Milt Wade 702-395-5949. He is a long time GMC owner, past president of GMC Western States and a car guy. Milt should know.
BTW as often posted, the engine is not a Chevy 454 but an Olds 455. Some mechanics try to find parts and treat it like a 454

And remember that the fuel pump has no return hose. Many will buy a fuel pump for a mid '70's Toronado only to find an extra nipple. The Toronado's WITHOUT air conditioning have the proper fuel pump.

Better yet order it from Jim K.

Check the Black list for Milt Wade. He was president of GMCWS and lives in
Las Vegas.
