Nancy, the front is secured by the screws and the rear slides under a bracket. If you lift slightly on the front you should then be able to pull it towards you and slide it out of the bracket in back. The bench units are heavier than you might think, so try getting some assistance if needed.

Thanks for the diagram, yes the PO did put two screws in the rear bracket.
I don't know how he did it, I'm having a hard time getting them out. I
just hope I don't need to put them back in, we like the settee situation,
so fixed bed won't work, we are trying to restore to as visually 1977 as
possible.

Nancy,
Since you mentioned restoring to as original in appearance as possible, you might enjoy John Harper's photo albums. Lots of original details and how- to's.
John has been gone now for a couple oy years -- he left us a nice legacy.
