We pulled our lp gas tank, cleaned it up, painted it, and took it to kamps propane
to replace the slightly leaky valve and check it over.

Apparently, they lost it. :-(

Fortunately, we have a claim tag they gave us. They're looking for the tank, maybe they'll
find it, maybe the won't. In any case, the manual says the capacity is 62lbs,
but I'm absolutely certain the tank tag said more than that. I remember being
surprised at that. I recall something like 86 lbs, or maybe it was 70-something lbs??
Just can't remember for sure. Were there different sizes available as an option?

At any rate, could somebody please look at their lp gas tank in a 26' coach
(ours is a 1975 eleganza) and tell me what the tag actually says the capacity is?
It may be difficult to read, but should be on there.

Just want to be prepared if/when they tell us they really can't find the thing...

grumble, grumble....

thanks,
Karen

The 1973 MM says
'The standard tank is 30" long and holds 44.5 lbs of LP gas and the optional 40" tank holds 65 lbs.'
The 40" tank won't fit in the propane compartment of a 23' GMC.
They are not supposed to be filled more than 80%, so the VOLUME of the 40" tank (if you could fill it 100%) would probably allow it to hold a little over 81 lbs. Don't do that.

the problem is, these tanks are special (ASTM) tanks that are "stationary
tanks" that can use the old valves (not the new safety valves)

you might have to use something like this
http://goo.gl/RNBRG

or get an old one from someone here.

Why is that a problem? They are still made in various sizes.

The list price sheets or Sales Brochures for GMC interiors list the following:
1973-74 44.5 lbs. standard.
62 lbs. optional

1975 & later, no options, large tank standard.

I had been looking for a smaller tank for sometime and found one at one of the RV surplus places back a few years. It is 20 lbs, with brackets for horizontal mounting, with a gauge & connections for the inside gauge we have (believe it is likely from a forklift).

Works well, very happy with it and the extra storage space it allows.

Down side:
Heading South in the winter with 20-30 Deg. weather the furnace will use most of a full 20 lb. tank. Normal usage with minimal furnace usage lasts me all season.

When going to an lpg fill station, two things usually happen:
- they always want to fill it on end,(like a standard 20 lb barbecue tank)even with all the mounting hardware making it very obvious how it is used.

- They initially refuse to fill it because it doesn't have an OPD valve. You need the "no OPD" sticker as shown in the link below, I also carry the sheet from the LPG Dealers Manual that identifies the vintages etc. that are allowed to be filled without the OPD valve. (both of these are somewhere in my photo albums, just make a copy).

This also leads me to a pet pieve: Most lpg fill people are downright dangerous! They are poorly trained and barely understand proper fill and safety proceedures. It is up to YOU to make sure your coach or family is not compromised!

I agree and get nervous when some kid at joe's bait shop and party store tries to refill a tank. Now, with a shameless plug, most people don't realize U-Haul is the county's largest propane dealer and all of our dispensing people go through training specifically for portable and fixed applications.

I hope they find your tank because any other solution will be more work for you.
Used propane tanks can not legally be shipped.
I needed to replace the tank on my '78. I got a used replacement from John Richardson in Florida. He brought it to Nashville and another GMCer stored it for a couple of months until I passed through. When I got home, I found it was not quite the same as mine. It was from a 75 or 76. I had to do some modifying to get it to just barely fit. So be sure to you check which years are interchangeable if you go that route.
I could not find a new ASME that would fit so I used a 30lb horizontal DOT style until I obtained the used tank. It worked fine but had to be removed to be filled. That can be good at times but I have never had a problem finding a place to fill the ASME tank. Plus, the inside gauge did not work with DOT tank. It does not have a sender built in.
A smaller used ASME tank that will work is one from a Rialta motorhome. John Richardson did this and that is why he had the used one. The used ones are out there but again, they can not be shipped.

Thank you! That rings a bell -- I'm sure ours said 19.3 gallons too.
Doing the math, I think the manual's claim of 62lbs is the actual
capacity at the max 80% fill, so it's roughly an 80lb tank for
replacement purposes.

I found a picture on the photo site I can use that looks identical:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=36947

We'll give them a day or two to look and see what they say.
If they've really lost it, they've got some serious 'splainin' to do!!

thanks,
Karen

thanks. I can see the appeal of a smaller tank. Seems kinda silly to haul
around a year's (or more) supply of propane and a huge tank on every trip.
That outside storage could be more useful for other things.

We'll figure something out if need be.

thanks,
Karen

Karen,

Any RV dealer can get you a new Manchester tank from their suppliers
(Stag-Parkway or Coast-to-Coast, IIRC). Not cheap, but many styles
available.

I got lucky and found a new 6 gallon (useable) tank for $100 at a surplus
place in Elkhart many years ago. Even that's big enough for us since we
don't have a furnace and seldom use the stove. 6 months to a year
supporting only the fridge and the water heater when not on shore power.

Karen, if your tank is REALLY lost you might want to call Manchester tank. Maybe they make a tank that mounts at the bottom.
