I was surprised that the Army sent two active duty soldiers in what I call full dress uniform. The funeral was for a 74 year old that was a draftee and did nothing extraordinary during his service. He was in for 2 years in the peace time pre-Vietnam US Army. I talked to the two Sargents (an e-5 and an E-6) both with combat infantry badges and asked where they were stationed. They both were stationed locally and all they do is attend funerals for ex-army people. It turns out that they are dispatched out of Fort Knox but are stationed locally at sites around the country.

I was impressed that the US Army bothered to do this.

The funeral attendees, especially the family, really appreciated their participation.

We still attract the very best to serve their country. I think when the outlet of the 24 hour news and info-tainment sludge pump is continuously fed to our TVs, we might miss that.

The Army Army reserve and Army National Guard has "honor guard units"
who do this for all former members of the military.

If you served honorably, received an honorable discharge, no matter
how "unremarkable" your service,

your going to get the service people to come and say good bye.

Some people in my unit have been assigned to such units.

The local American Legion & VFW Posts combine their efforts and serve an
average 2 or more funeral details per week for Vets. This includes a very
dignified service, flag ceremony, firing squad, bugler and Color Guard.
This takes an average of 17 members per funeral. No charge to the family.
We sometimes have an active duty detail also show up and try to include them
in our program.

Interesting. I have been to a lot of veteran's funerals and have not seen this. My dad was a combat veteran and had a flag folded on his casket but no one from the Army. Maybe Teri can call the Air Force and have them attned mine. We have a very nice Veteran's Cemetary about 6 miles from our home. Every week there is something in the local paper about it. I like that and may be buried there, have not decided yet. It is great to hear that the 2 guys were at your friend's funeral Ken. As someone said, we don't see good stuff like this in the news much.

My oldest sisters husband died last year. He was a WW 2 PT Boater, Navy
Vet. At his graveside service, they had a full Military ceremony, complete
with electronic Bugle playing Taps, and rifles that made some kind of
electronic representation of a report. Several of them misfired. Immediatly
after the honor guard presented the tri cornered folded flag to my sister,
God decided that we all needed some cleansing water. A lightning strike
very nearby, and immediately followed by a tremendous thunderclap, capped
off by some of the hardest rain that I could remember in my life concluded
the ceremony. Guess God is displeased by electronic bugle music and phony
rifles. Strange what particulars stick in your mind when you remember
funerals.

Yes, the Family has to request the presence of Military honor guards
in order for them to appear. If we don't get a request, we don't know
about it (the funeral) happening.

Usually the American Legion or the VFW would notify us, (if its a
retiree or someone not currently serving) If its an active duty
soldier who has fallen, we are notified by the

military as to where the funeral will be, and what is requested. Often
many families just want a flag-folding or a small contingent of
military there versus a full compliment of casket bearers and a volley
(firing) team.

It just depends on the family and what they want. Often, they just
have a service without the honor guard.

Many simply don't know about the honor guard units.

During the Late Unpleasantness, my FANG unit supplied Honor Guard/Pallbearers for returning AF types who hasd assumed room temperature in SEA.  I went on more than one would like.  I expect I can still fold the Flag with a certain amount of panache and present it properly to the family.  Most of these were funerals in country churches around and south of Montgomery.  I have Tales to Tell, particularly at some of the services for Africna AMerican airmen.
I feelk like if you went and got shot at, you're entitled to a proper sendoff no matter who and where you are.

You're welcome :):)

The bulk of mine was as a FANG.  I spent a minor amount of time in SEA teaching some regular Air Farce guys how to maintain a piece of equipemment we lent them cos theirs got blown into relatively small pieces.  After which I came home posthaste.  Some of the folks here stuck around longer, they have my sympathy and respect.
I did have a minor set - to with one of the kids who showed up at the hip-hop station we have, wearing a C.I.B.  I asked him where he earned it, he says he thought it was 'cool'.  I asked him - politely of course - to reconsider how he accesorized in the future.  He was most gracious in complying.  My afternoon jock assisted him, this guy did the Iraq thing for three trips before he got out.  Part of the request from the jock included 'knock your dick off' among other persuasions.
