Brought home my 78 EL II from Zeb Frady at Southland Motor Home, Buford, GA. Zeb (actually his sons, I think) installed my new LS 3.70 FD. Took all of a couple of days, from Saturday drop off to Saturday pick up, whew! My 403 now has some pick and go. Zeb said he took the coach out for the "installation completed" check ride. He mentioned how nice my brakes are and that the reaction arm brake system really gets the coach to hunker down and STOP! So 2 thumbs up from one of our GMC Gurus.

George,
You can bump ut the timing 2-3 degrees as the engine now operates with
less load.
You will then realize a better milage of 5-12%.
Migule at MGM loves our 3.70.

Been reading this thread with a lot of interest since the LS 3.70 has been on my list for awhile.
But I was thinking about it while driving this morning and noticed that at 60mph I'm turning 2900 rpm, and I know the 3.70 will run even higher rpm at same speed, so should I be concerned or is there something else going on?

I don't think mione spins that fast at 60 per. More like 2400. Now, I have stock wheels and tyres, so there may be a difference there. I'm using a Sun Cheap Line tach driven off the TACH terminal of the HEI, and the stock speedo. I note, the speedo is pessimistic by a couple of percent at 60. Given the lack of driveshaft on these toys, it ain't quite so easy as one might like to check the true ratio of the diff.

and that doesn't count the possibilty of changed gears on the chain. Sure wish I could could mechanically determine the ratio !!

Jay, What are you using to measure the 60mph?
All three of my coaches would be doing about 70 when the stock speedo was reading 60.
(Removing the stock CC helped on the '78 and with a small gear change matches the GPS.)

It's even easier. Put the trans in park, turn one wheel and count the number of turns the other turns and divide by 2.

Ignition timing is not what the marketing people call for but the
mission people do.
When Ford had a drivability problem in 1974, I unofficially showed
them how to set the timing by the book then slip and accidentally
advance the timing about 2-3 degrees before locking down the
distributor.

Speed according to dash gauge, from Custom Instrument Panels by a PO. But I have checked it through highway odo checks and it's pretty close.
Don't know what diff I have, but pretty sure it's not stock, as I have references in notes from PO that it could be a 3.42 or a 3.50.

That isn't going to get you the FD ratio. You aren't involving the ring and pinion.

This a memory I enjoy.
About that time, I was helping a friend tune up (a real tune-up R&R points and plugs, set valve lash at least). The car was "new to him" and neither of us knew the engine well, so we read the book. When we got done, it ran like 5h1t...
We Checked Everything again, dwell, plug gaps, valve lash, the vacuum and mechanical advances. We even ran a check to confirm that the TDC mark was correct. Nothing - Zip - Nada
Finally, I called a friend that was a lifelong Ford guy.
He asked if we had set it up by the book?
When we said, "Yes."
He responded, "There's your problem!! - Bump the timing ahead 5."
We did and the result was a vast improvement.
Speaking of timing...
Does anybody know why GM/Olds does not give a base timing specification (like 4° at 650) instead of having you shot at a moving target when the advance is already on the curve at 1100RPM?

Thanks! I'll be working on the engine this week end. Oil change, etc.
Once finished I plan on a short cruise with the gps on to record rpms/gps mph and will report back.
I have the 3.07 (78 EL II, ~81,000 m)available as I had a core available to return with the original transaction. Anyone interested?
