Is there any info regarding what Internet access
may be available at the Shawnee convention coming
up this month?

I usually bring access points and repeaters to cover the GMCMI conventions, but I was told we are covered already. So I'm leaving the WiFi stuff at home. The last few conventions have had access available at the site already so I'm having to do less of this. That is good for me.

The last time we were in Amana Colonies the had the area covered although they had some upstream technical issues. It is now 5 years later so I'm assuming they have resolved those long ago.

At these conventions please do not assume that you have enough bandwidth to do streaming video or audio. A couple of those sessions can take out the whole system. Also do not assume you can run mission critical business applications.

It is a "Crap Shoot" on how well any of these semi-public offerings work. Most of them run a 1.5 meg (T1) upstream link for the entire park. This more than adequate for email and web browsing. Just assume the service is about the same as McDonalds and you will be OK.

If you need 95% dependable access, bring your own cell phone Internet service with you and you will not be disappointed.

We have had good service at some of the recent conventions
DuQuoin - Provided by the park at 1.5 meg
Delaware - We put in a our own DSL line
Pueblo - I found an unused Cable circuit and we broadcast that
Berrien Springs - We installed our own DSL line

Others sites like Goshen and Rice Ranch had service with network design issues the severely limited bandwidth availability.

Enjoy the rally and you wont have time to get on the Internet anyway. I wonder what they did for Internet service at the rallies in the 1980s and 1990's when these coaches were still fairly new?

Ken, Kim, et al,

From the problems we've seen at recent rallies where "good" wifi is
provided, we should make an early plea to all of our attendees to NOT
stream video because of the serious impact it has on the limited
bandwidth available. It's probably important enough to justify a bold
statement in the information packet (notebook) everyone receives at
registration.

We do have Internet access. Keith and I were there during a Good Sams rally with about twice as many motorbikes and the service worked great. Kim

I wonder what they did for Internet service at the rallies in the 1980s and 1990's when these coaches were still fairly new?

The 80's and 90's, Are we back at Win 98 and Mellenium Op systems?? Was WiFi even big then? I recall it was all phone line access and Win 98 not so reliable, Mellenium not much better.

I recently found a prog that was keeping my computer working at IDLE at 80% to 100+%. This constant run caused loooooooooooong wait times for internet access EVERY TIME I clicked and frequent crashes. After I removed the offending prog.. Idle use runs a 0-3%.. a very acceptable rate and the computer is under control again. I have since implemented a great backup system as well so I can restore like it never happened...

I am unsure what DISNEY's IntNet accesses are. I know they had telephone line hook up at the reservation shack and charged per 24hr period for other connection, may be wi fi but not at the sites. I read that changes have been made but I assume cost is involved.

We all appreciate your work and efforts for providing IntNet accesses at the ralleys, these silly machines can take up a lot of time.............

Very Happy

I think you missed my point. I go to rallies for the rally and activities there. If I was to occupy my time at the rally on the Internet I could just stay home and do that all day while saving a lot of money.

From what I hear that is such a farce.
Al Gore may want you to think he eats like Eul Gibbins but the internet was already in existance BEFORE Al was in office.
It was a rough form but the military used it for communications and data exchange. I suppose you could say it was top secret.

Al Gore just let everyone know it was there, so what did he really do that he can truthfully boast about?

You know, we should put Al back in the white house... I can't imagine what he will "INVENT" next....

Even though Al was from Tennessee and a Democrat, he was the first public
official in the national spotlight that actually referred to using the
Internet.

I'm also real happy he didn't develop a theory on global warming since we
haven't experienced it this winter while the penguins are thinking of
removing their tuxedo suits. Otherwise, he'd have egg on his face.

The internet was invented by DARPA (Defense Department) as ARPANET and eventually, after growing and additional development by NSF, was ready for commercial development. Al Gore sponsored legislation that helped to fund its commercial development while in Congress. His claim was to have some part in the initiative to convert ARPANET and NSFNET into the 'internet' and commercial applications. He did not claim to 'invent' the internet. There is a good article about this at http://greatgreenroom.org/cgi-bin/bt/backtalk/wasabi/begin?item=11

Guys
While I am on top of the 49th and it really doesn't matter much to me
personally what happens politically south of the boarder, be careful not to
let this evolve into a political commentary or knuckles will be rapped.
And if you have sore and possibly skinned knuckles they should have been
acquired by working on your GMC, not from typing on a computer....<VBG>
Just sayin'

It wasn't meant as any defense of Gore (I am not a fan) - it was more to be accurate about how the internet got started.

Interesting post Armand. I knew about the ARPANET and NSF, but nothing
about any Fed subsidy.
