I think that my shower drain trap may be cracked from water freezing in it.

How do I access the trap to either repair or replace it?

Thanks for your advice.

Mike, the lower panel of the door opening is removable and should give you enough room for inspection. I believe it is too tight for replacing the p-trap though.

As John has said the panel under the door of the shower is removal. It could be hidden behind the carpet and there are several screws to remove it..It is a tight fit but you can replace the trap if necessary. You need to remove the shower floor drain first loosening the fitting on the trap and then turning the fixture in the shower CCW. I used a set of channel lock pliers putting the handles down in the trap and there are special tools also that you can get at most hardware stores.

Here is an example of the drain removal tool...

And here is what it looks like under the shower -- after you remove the access panel John mentions...

Rick,

I suggest investigate completely before you do anything rash.

Our shower leaked at one time. I though it was the trap, but I discovered that all it was was that the installation of the floor drain was done very poorly. There was no way to get the drain tight in the plastic below. At this time I don't actually recall
what I did, but I recall making a shim to be between the underside of the shower floor and the top of the trap. That let me caulk under the drain flange and get it tight enough to stay in place.
