Hi, I looked an Airstream 360 in La Conchita, a coastal CA town south of
Santa Barbara about a month ago. Had a 454 in it. Decent exterior, interior
needed work. Guy was asking $10,000. Probably a good resto project but hey,
I have a GMC.

Hang on to the GMC -- you may wish you had it back.
We had a '90 Airstream 36' Land Yacht (fiberglass, NOT the classic
aluminum tube like I presume yours is) with 454 on the same P-30
chassis. Had lots of nice features, as one might expect of a premium
coach based on years & years of experience building RV's. But a
pretty sorry vehicle overall. The PO was the original owner and had
it back to the factory a couple of times when new for major repairs.
It had 47,000 miles on it when I bought it with most of the problems
corrected. It didn't take long to learn that the 454 had a VERY poor
reputation among dealers -- no one wanted to touch one with 50,000+
miles on it.
One of the 454's big problems was eating spark plug wires. The
silicone plug wire caps were covered with a mica shield inside a metal
sleeve. I went through a complete set of new wires between GA & GA
via Oregon.
Then there was the windshield wiper fiasco: The wiper motor failed so
I went to the AS dealer in Orlando for a replacement. After a LONG
time on the phone with the factory, the dealer's parts man passed the
message: "We no longer provide parts for that setup -- you'll have to
replace the assembly consisting of a frame to support both wiper
pivots and the motor -- $500+." Fortunately, I wasn't quite that dumb
and found a truck dealer down the street who provided me with a
close-enough motor that I could modify to fit -- $57.
There were lots of other minor problems that finally led me to TRADE
(something I almost never do) it on a new 40' diesel pusher. That's
desperation! :-)
Now mind you, I've done a LOT more work on the GMC during the past 13+
years than I did on the AS during the one year we kept it, but it's
been much more rewarding too.
JMHO -- sorry to sound negative.
Oh, did I mention that it rode like the truck chassis it was on?
Or the exploding electric brakes on the tag axle?

When I interviewed Bill Howard for a possible article on Upfitters, he told
me he built and sold 22 units. Bill was not very cooperative as far as
sitting down and getting him to answer some questions about the GMC program
but Buddy, who was the principle outlet for these beauties, ve rified the
number a s correct.
I am convinced Explorer lost a ton of money on the GMC II. Bill never
said one way or the other.
There are 14 GMC IIs listed in the Registry. Good luck with sale of yours,

Some years ago when Explorer Van was just starting to work on renewing GMC motorhomes, We attended a Great Laker rally at Warsaw, IN. Part of the rally was going through the area where they converted the motorhomes. We told them they needed to come over to the rally and get information on things that worked and didn't work on the GMC. They were using the Jasper transmissions and engines and they were warned about the problems with the typical Jasper engine and transmissions. There was a lot of input to them, but they ignored most of it. The Explorer Van was a great piece of work and I still have my i993 van. I suspect their greatest expense was replacing the Jasper engines and transmissions. Don Leslie bought one of the first ones at the GMCMI rally in Titusville, FL and had more trouble with it than you can imagine. Explorer's best area was the excellent interior work they did on vans and it showed on the good interior work they did on their GMC's.
