Hi all,

Since purchasing my GMC a few days ago and joining this list, I've
received a few invitations to join various GMC organizations, and I'm
trying to decide which of them to join, if any.

FMCA membership seems to be a prerequisite for the various
GMC-specific clubs, so that one is a given - but which other clubs are
recommended?

FMCA, GMCMI, plus the nearest regional club seems like a reasonable
way to go, but I was curious what others are doing.

Thanks!

I'd say you've got it!
About the only other item of business would be for you to add your location
under your name and model in the signature of your email.
Welcome aboard !

Sean,
First of all, where do you live and what are your plans and expectations for you and your GMC? Yes, all of the GMC clubs started out in the beginning as GMC factory backed clubs. When the factory dropped the clubs they all at one time or another went under the FMCA banner. FMCA underwrites the GMC clubs' rally liability insurance amoung other bennies. If you request to join a GMC club the GMC club should offer you a free year membership in FMCA. So the first step is if you want to join a GMC club, contact them first for an application. Now there are roughly three tiers of GMC clubs. GMCMI // GMC Western States & GMC Eastern States // Then the local or regional clubs. I happen to belong to GMCMI, GMCES and GMC Sunshine Statesmen, GMC Dixielanders and I am President of the GMC TIDEWATER CRABS. Each club is a little different. Some are strong on technical things, some are more social and some are a little of both. It all depends on your favorite flavor.

Sean,

That is about it.
FMCA and GMCMI you have figured out...
Then there is Western States. They do more of technical interest stuff (Like Eastern States)

You may also find out that there are several locals that vary in interest. I am by no means any kind of an expert.
Saguaro Jetset is based in Arizona, and seems to be largely social (like many other chapters). Look up the websites at http://www.bdub.net/GMCLinks.html Bdub's.

There are also local FMCA groups. You may choose to investigate those as they may provide some good company and discounts to special events. Most of those are attended by 53' SOBs with awnings, patios and an SUV for a toad. (Still good people, but they can't relate to GMC issues.)

Then there are groups like Tin Can Tourists. This is a group of old RV owners. They are interesting, but kind of cliquish. It seems there are the Airstreams and everybody else... If you get to one, you may get to talk to FMC, Revcon and Cortez owners.

Get to a GMC rally as soon as you can manage, there are people you should meet. Did you download the Black (aka GMC assist) list?

Thanks everybody, that's all useful info! I think I'll take a closer
look at GMCWS.

I currently work full time and don't have much opportunity to attend
rallys and whatnot just yet, but I hope to at some point. Need to get
the beast a bit more roadworthy before we take a long trip! Will be
sure to grab the Black list before we do :)

Hi Sean,
We (GMCWS) have an offer of a free first-year membership to FMCA if you join GMCWS for 3 years. Our memberships are $20 per year so for $60 you get $110 worth of memberships.

See this page: http://gmcws.org/blog/?page_id=582

GMCWS prides itself on fun and good food along with some good technical information. We'd love to have you as a member.

We also belong to GMCSJ - the Saguaro Jetset - a purely social club that was originally all GMCs but is now mixed. We meet at various locations in Arizona and maybe New Mexico about 1 short rally per month in the winter.

Sean,

Armand has a great offer going for you. We are members of FMCA, GMCMI, GMGWS, and GMCSJ. My wife and I both work full time, I am self employed and somewhat more flexible on my work schedule than she is. We manage to get to most of the Saguaro Jetset rallies, usually a three day weekend, once per month from Nov. to Mar. or Apr. and often in Southern AZ. some as close to you as Benson or Bisbee. I have made one International rally and we are going to attend the upcoming one in Shawnee. we were also able to make it to a Western States rally (Las Vegas) on the return leg of another trip. We still feel it is worthwhile to maintain membership in WS and International.

If there is a Western States or International rally within a two day (or so) drive from Tucson, we try to make plans to be there. They are always fun and information filled events.

Let me give you a slightly different perspective.  I use my coach almost exclusively to go to dog shows.  So, thye technical expertise is of prime importance to me, I pick broins for tips on how to keep it going.  Consequently, since I'm in Georgia, I joined FMCA and GMCES.  I also attended a rally of one of the regional clubs (Dixielanders) and found the people without exception to be the nicest friendliest group of folks it's been my privlege to spend a bit of time with in many years.  When time and budget permit, i.e. when I retire if ever, I'll join one or more of the more social clubs.  I suspect they're all equally outgoing.

As someone said, depends what you do with your GMC.

Johnny,

You are 100% correct about those Dixielanders!

Just keep an eye on that Chuck Boyd character; I hear he's a biker that has
a bunch of Harleys and you know what those kinds of guys are like!

Unfortunately - or fortunately, I'm not sure - The National Specialty Show for my breed is the 3rd of May at Purina Farms just outside St Louis.  Since I am chairing the Specialty, I'll have to be there.  Safely ensconced in my GMC which usually daws notice at shows.  I >was< gonna try to catch the GMCES thing in Bowling Green the weekend and day before, but my boss decided to let a kinsman marry that weekend out of town, so I'm here in Atlanta.

Mac,

I have a 1988 Heritage Softail which has been in some interesting places.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=24277

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=43253

I have fun with the Harley riders when I tell them along with the HD I have
a REAL motorcycle - a 2003 Ducati S-4 Monster. It weighs less than 200kg,
puts 120 HP on the ground; goes around turns intuitively, and stops on a
dime and gives $0.09 change!

I had one fool challenge me to a race with his "ape hangered" Softail
Custom. I asked him what day he wanted to race around the Eastern Creek race
track and that was the end of that conversation.

Rob M.

Rob,
I have a 1984 kawi gpz750 turbo. I has 116 hp. and weighs in around 520. In 84 it was the first production motorcycle to break the 10 sec quarter mile.
I get some surprised looks when this 61 year old white haired grandfather passes a pimpled faced crotch rocket driver.
Hurray for old farts....

Love it Rob. I got some lip service from a Harley owner (unsolicited) so I
proposed a race to see which bike was better. I suggested a jaunt from San

Steve,

I just realized I need to clarify one point, I do love my Harley - for
TOURIN' & CRUZIN'

It's like sitting in an easy chair with arms outspread on the handle bars.

The engine has been modified and produces about 85 HP at the rear wheel and
the long stroke and massive flywheels in the engine produce enough torque so
that I don't have to downshift unless I want to accelerate fast.

The riding position for Helen and myself is perfect, her head is slightly
higher than mine and she can take in the scenery without having to lean left
or right.

Having said that she says she likes the GMC better as she has the same sort
of view AND she can do cross stitch as we "head on down the highway! ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.
