I'm finally getting around to doing some suspension work on the coach, and I need to buy appropriate jack and stands. Which have been found to be most useful in our application?

Are there any floor jacks out there that are low enough to get under a bogie with the suspension down, but will go high enough on the front crossmember to raise the front wheels off the ground ?

Which jack stands would be most useful overall (front & back)?

For jack stands I use these that you can make any height you need. Read all the photo details for the complete story.

I have a 3-1/2 ton Craftsman floor jack that I bought ten or twelve years ago. It will lift the front end from under the crossmember, or one side from under the bogie frame.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=34493

I use a pair of 4-ton jack stands for the front and a pair of 6-ton (AC/Delco from O'Reilly Auto Parts) for the rear.

Pete,
You can't beat the home made jack stands . They are very solid with a wide
base and the top 2x4 grips very well on to the frame. I am using a pair
that I made up while doing the front end work on my coach.

Pete,

Buy three ton jack stands wherever you can find them at the cheapest price.
Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, Napa, AutoZone, Advance Auto, Sears, etc.

When you use them it is MOST important to make sure that the "tooth" which
enters the rack is fully engaged or the GMC could fall and turn you into a
pancake!

The same goes for the floor jack, however, I would suggest staying AWAY from
the "quick pump" models, they are a bitch to pump up at their upper weight
limit.

Regards,
Rob M.

I'm with Rob on this only I bought the 6 ton stands and got them from Harbor freight on sale. $19 a pair about 8 yrs ago. I have 6 of them now (3 pair) and usually double up on them. If I lift the front, I will place two under the front crossmember and before I let it down completely on them, I will adjust another pair under the frame behind the front wheels. I also put 2 X 8's under the stands to keep it from sinking into the asphalt driveway. The Jack I use is a 2 1/2 ton long frame jack that I got from HF. With it I can lift the front end to any height I need, place stands in appropriate spots and get on with my work...all up and secure in about 5 minutes. Maybe I'm overkilling it, but I knew a guy that died under a compact car when it came down on him. We are dealing with 12K lbs here and you can't be to safe. The 6 ton may cost a little more, but to my way of thinking, it's a one time investment....What's your life worth? JMHO

You did not tell him about your jack.

I stopped by Larry's one time on a return trip from Manitoba and Larry got out his long reach high lift floor jack from Harbor Freight. It lifted the entire front with no problem. Slide in a couple (or 4) jack stands for safety and you are ready to go in less than a minute or so. The jack will also lift either side of the rear. I think it is rated at 5000 pounds. I'll have to look the next time I'm out there.

I liked it so much that I stopped one the way home and bought one for myself. It stays parked right next to my GMC my hangar. I think is was around $120. It is the only jack I use now on any vehicle.

The only thing better is Blaine's 4 post lift in his Florida room.

Oh yes, to save Rob from having to post.

Harbor Freight tools are junk. This one has only lasted 5 or 6 years without a problem.

Larry or Ken, I was looking this morning for a floor jack that would lift the coach onto the wooden jack stands that I just built (thanks Steve) and I couldn't find one that fit your description. They are almost all "rapid pump" which would make lifting the coach a little tough I think. Do you have an item number?

Seeing that the 6 ton stands are sold as a pair, I would think each one is good for 3 tons.

I don't have a model or item # on the jack that Ken B and I have, and the last time I was in HF, I noticed that it was not available at the store I was in. They may have dropped it from their line of jacks. It does not have to be a HF jack, another long reach jack of a different brand and at least 2 1/2 ton would work. Also, IIRC the stands were 6 ton "each" in the pair for a total of 12 tons. Even if they were 3 ton each for a total of 6 tons, 6 is more than enough to hold up our 2 ton front end. JMHO

I bought a 3-ton aluminum "racing" floor jack on sale
at either Harbor Freight or Northern Tool (don't recall
which) when it was on sale for about $40 off. It pumps
up somewhat slowly, so probably not "rapid pump" type.
It's very nice but I haven't lifted anything yet. Lots
lighter than the steel ones, though. Still quite a load
to lift by this old man!

I have the long reach jack from Harbor Fright that has been referred to. Mine was #42820, which the HF website says is no longer available. It was, as Ken B said, about $120 on sale at that time ('07).

Thanks for the number. I definitely do not have the box for it any more. I'll look on the jack the next time I'm out there. I'm sure the number you gave must be correct.

I did not realize that they were no longer available.

I love mine. The long reach - high lift really does the trick.

Thanks again

Yeah but that sucker is HEAVY! It also needs quite a pull on the handle to get it to lift the front of the GMC. The foot pedal pump lever on mine is only good for getting the jack up quickly to the point where it picks up the load.

That is exactly the kind of jack I'm looking for, but I can't seem to find any comparable long reach / lift models out there for under $500 or so. HFT definitely does not list or stock it anymore, and it appears that it was exclusive for HFT. The nearest thing to it currently is the 4 ton jack with a verticle reach of about 20". There is also this one, which appears highly rated:

Thanks for all the other suggestions and input!

My aluminum 3-ton jack is a Pittsburgh "Racing" jack, and it's
labeled "RapidPump." I don't know the model/part number.

When collapsed, the lifting point is about 4" above the floor,
and the body is about 8" high. The pump handle extends to
about 54" above the floor.

The nearest thing to it currently is the 4 ton jack with a verticle reach of about 20". There is also this one, which appears highly rated:

I wish I had the specs on mine but I don't. I do not know the maximum lift. That thing was made in China so one would think that other vendors like Northern tool would also handle it.

I'll check the next time I see a tool sale going on someone should have them.
