The time has come for me to buy tires for our GMC. I made the suprising discovery that the tires on the GMC are over 10 years old. EEK. I am using the lt225/75R16 BFG Commercial T/A tires now. I plan on getting the same tires as replacements. Since I haven't thought about tires for a (long) while is there any other recommended tires I should look into.
Thanks for any information I get

Jim,

I have heard good reports on Toyo Open Country tires in that size and plan to look into them when I buy. One large local dealer (Gateway Tire). who is known for good service, handles them.

Jim, There are many GMC owners on B.F. Goodrich T/As. Quite a few on
Michelin also. Both are very high quality. You got ten years out of yours.
Sounds like a great recommendation to me. I personally run them also. I
have seen some chewed up TOYO's with very few miles on them. Couldn't say
if it was the coach or the tire though.

I liked my Coopers SRM II on the other coach. I plan on putting them on this coach, when it becomes time. The Poly sidewall construction is a closer match to the original design bias ply in flexiblity than a steel sidewall. I believe the ride is better, but that is a very subjective statement.

Rag sidewalls give the best ride and handling. Steel sidewalls magnify any
worn parts like front end bushings and tie rods or bogie pins and bushings,
but probably give slightly better tire life and perhaps a slight advantage
in fuel consumption from my personal experience.

The BFG have gotten good mentions on this board (along with your mention). I have Michelin LTX M/S LREs and so far so good. IF the BFG are USA made I'd go with them over Toyo just because.

IMO you should buy a well known brand name tire. I tried a set of "Off Brand" tires. First of all, they wore out quicker than I expected. Second, when I had problems with one of the tires, I could not find a dealer while traveling in the south (I'm from Wisconsin) that could adjust it for me. I ended up putting the spare on and driving it 3K miles until I got it home to make the adjustment. Personally, I'm getting Michelin LTX M/S LREs, two at a time and spreading out the cost. To many of my friends run the Michelin's and get good milage and no troubles with them. If you do have problems, dealers can be found all over the US and Canada. JWID

I use all steel RIB Michelin LT tires and would never look back. Ultra expensive, and drive like a dream. I'd can't imagine anyone that thinks different actually owned these tires. They drive wonderfully! My rag walls caused more stinking handling issues but they were crappy chinese junk-o-la. The second my Michelin went on my GMC it went from I hate driving this piece of #$%##%%##, to "where we going"

Jim--tires are in a large part a matter of personal preference. My Michelin all steel rib tires lasted 12 years before the cracking started to get severe. However, I hated them and it was like a bad relationship waiting for someone to die. When I bought my BFG commercial T/A's I thought I was in heaven. I like the traction, ride, and handling. The on-center response is a bit loose and they are slightly noisy. Given that I got a good deal at Costco was enough to satisfy this cheap Dutchman.

I got Hankooks poly/steel with recent date codes. I'd rather suffer from a slightly harder ride on the 5K miles I'm likely to put on them before they age out, than stretch expensive tires for more years than I should because of how much I spent on the tires.

As Jim K would put it Red Chinese tires.
Capital tires are made in China by Beijing Capital Tire Co., Ltd., an
independent tire manufacturer that was founded in December 1999.

I use Capital Tire on one of my Mercedes and they ride great. On the GMC holy cow they were rotten. Even the tire guy that sold them had to agree they were pitiful.

I have had good luck with the Goodrich TA's and Bridge stone Duravis 700. Actually I like the more aggressive tread on the Bridge stone Duravis. Cost co is where I got them when they were on sale.

China makes what companies ask for. Cheap or High Tech they can do it all. The Ipad is a great example of that.

This policy of "engineer onshore/produce offshore"will eventually export
enough technology that shouldn't be in the hands of countries that ain't
exactly our friends that will render our high tech military hardware
vunerable. This says nothing about exporting living wage jobs along with
it. As long as the American consumer is willing to buy cheaply produced
goods at the expense of exported jobs, it is not likely that our economy
will improve much beyond what it is now. Kind of a sad state of affairs.
The era in which our GMCs was produced is as gone as the dinosaurs and our
generation is probably the last one that gives a Da## about it. Spend it on
things that matter to you, love your family and friends, keep your enemies
at arms length.
