Thanks, Paul,

I read that before the rebuild 11,000 miles ago, and again about 3 times
during this episode. Very interesting & challenging.

We delivered the crank to Cassidy Machine & Engines in Macon today. Very
impressive operation they've got there; strange I'd never stopped there
during my 15 years living nearby. Looking at the equipment, seeing the
range of engines in-process and completed, and talking to the owner and
staff, I'm convinced I'll get a good crank back. While only the thrust
face was badly damaged, all of the journals show enough evidence of the
circulated debris that they'll probably grind and polish them all to 0.010"
undersize.

They said it may be ready tomorrow; if not probably the next day. Great
turn-around!

Estimated cost: $195.

With that, all new bearings, gaskets, oil, filter, etc., I'll probably wind
up with another $500-$600 in the engine. Thank goodness there won't be any
more labor cost (I HOPE). :-)

Ken, when you get the crank back, be sure to get your Rifle cleaning
tool and clean all the oil passages.
You can never trust what they send.
I even had our shop send out a USED windshield and not noticed it.
I've had few calls for used windshields.

For sure!

Have you heard from Alan? He's having a heck of a time getting the
Rockwell pan sealed at the flange.

I only have experience with one of Rockwell's pans and I coated both
sides of the farpax gasket with permatex aviation gasket sealer and
torqued the bolts to 12 lbs.

IMO, you should call MTS or Cad Co and ask them about thrust bearing procedures.

G'day,

Good idée!

Along with the pictures my Mate down in Sydney came through with which I
forwarded to Ken I reckon that's put paid to that problem!

You can see the relief on the edge of the shell from the center out on 1/2
of the shell.

It appears to be precision machined.

Regards,
Rob M.

Gene,

I forwarded the pictures to Ken who needed them NOW. They show what Cadillac
did at the factory.

I don't have time to mess with posting them to the photo site as they need
annotating to be clear and unfortunately I don't have time to mess with them
now.

I am here for two months to:

1) move from a 12' x 32' storage shed to a 17' x 42'shed.
2) get a long list of TOIT's done on Double Trouble.
3) re-assemble the engine for the VW, re-install it and the rebuilt
transmission and get it ready to bring to a paint shop before I leave so it
can be painted while I'm back in Australia and ready when Helen and I come
back in July. I also need to get the interior installed after wards. It
ain't easy restoring vehicles (GMC and VW) long distance!

If anybody is building a Caddy 500 just let me know and I'll forward them to
you.

Regards,
Rob M.

I am VERY sorry to have mentioned it on the GMC net, I should have shut up
and just sent Ken the photos.

Oh wait a minute if I had done that Gary wouldn't have known to ask for
them.

Hmmmmm now I am so confused I guess I'll go to bed! ;-)
