The problem may be at the "crank" at the heater/AC box. Many times the cable will kink there and make it feel like the AC control is bad. Sometimes, the cable will kink right at the control head slider as well. If you have the back panel off, try slightly moving the lever and see if the cable is kinked or bound up. This is for the temp lever. If you have trouble with the mode lever, the problem will be a dry "wafer" in the vacuum control. That's a different issue we can walk you through.

I had no heat from the time I bought the GMC. From all the talk of lousy AC/heat from the vents, I thought it was just normal.
One other thing that threw me off was that one of the original PO's had cut all the vacuum lines to the heater control so there was no vacuum operation. I assume there must have been a vacuum problem and this was how they tried to find it. I don't know...
One day I was putzing around and removed the cable from the crank for the baffle door in the heat/AC box and found the crank moved forward and back easily but the cable was seized. I then started the GMC and when she warmed up, low and behold, I had heat coming from the vents.
Further inspection found that the cable end at the control under the dash had disintegrated so the cable could not slide inside the casing. I ordered a cable from Jim B ( I could not get hold of Jim K for some reason ), and after I installed the new cable I could now turn on and off the heat by the control on the dash.
You may or may not have a similar problem but this is what fixed my lack of heat problem.

If the "mode" lever is sticking it may be due to the circular wafer that directs vacuum to different ports when you move the lever. It rotates and may be stuck from inactivity. I'd avoid taking it apart for now since they are fragile and prone to leaking. At this point, I'd keep applying a bit of WD40 to that circular plastic part and coax it a bit avery few days to see if it loosens up.

Nancy,
The cable mentioned by others is your most likely problem. There is also a plastic pin in the center of the whole mechanism that is very likely to break if you put an excessive amount of force on any of those levers. A replacement pin, made of aluminum, is available from Sirum's. Jim K. also stocks them. I broke mine one very cold morning and didn't have any control over the dash heat or AC until I finally took the control out, disassembled it, and replaced that pin. It was the kind of job that I put off because I was afraid to tackle it, but it turned out to be fairly straightforward and easy. It has worked well ever since. I'm still careful how much force I apply to those control levers. It should be a pretty easy fix, especially for a motorcycle mechanic like yourself.

Along with what others have said (and I think the nylon pin may be your problem, and needs to be replaced, see above) there is a seldom seen, or found adjustment on the AC/Heat blend door cable. Here is a photo of where it is:

It might help you or someone else.

While I have the dash apart, I am going to replace the radio, I need
something that gives me an ipod connections, hopefully that fits in nearly
exact as the stock one. Anybody with a brand that fits? I was really
hoping not to have to use a conversion kit.

So far, the Kenwood and Duals in DIN size fit... the holder they slide in is just the height to fit the cutout in the metal dash. Bend the two control tabs back enough to allow the mount to slide in, and bend the mount tabs up and down to hold it.

Nancy - care must be taken when changing the radio not to get the wrong wire for the ground connection. Something about a gray wire and the dash light circuit. Sorry but ICRC what it is exactly but someone will respond.

Nancy,
Except for some expensive retro-kits, everything out there is a DIN mount and will require some modification of the dash. As to what has iPod native connection, you will have to inquire on that one directly. Many, but not all can fit an extension cable that is iPod/iPhone compatible for both service and power, but Apple ties up so much with proprietary connections, that this has to be carefully investigated. Most every current DIN mount has or can add a 1/8 (3.5mm) stereo plug for input, but then you have to figure out how to get power there. Many also have USB, and Chinese cables for iThings are available.

I've got the mode slide working now, it was the cable, just unscrewed and

However the temperature slide is still stuck, any more suggestions?

Nancy, try disconnecting the cable at the crank on the LH side of the heater box under the driver side hatch. Sometimes the temp door sticks and you can free it by moving it by hand. If it moves freely, then try moving the temp lever with the cable still disconnected under the hood. If it is still tight, the cable may be semi seized.

The cable when disconnected, moves in and out when moving the dash
control. The crank moves freely when disconnected. When I reconnect, the
dash lever will not go all the way to the "cold" mode.
Also anyone have a parts number for the blower relay? The blower only
works sometimes, and usually on high. It goes on and off by itself.

That means the cable is misadjusted. At the control head you will see an adjustment sleeve that is plastic. You should be able to turn that by hand to move the cable to the correct position,

I`d check the ground wire on the blower motor first. They are famous for not being tight.
