Time to start preparing the coach for summer. Inspected the CV Joints and found that 2 are seeping, and 1 is dry. I will be replacing the boots and any CV if needed. Also going to get the ball joints done at the same time as they have been loose for a while.
The question is... while the front end is apart, is there anything else I should do at the same tme?
Cheers

Well, so far the one-ton upgrade is the best thing I've done.
Like Gene says, if you are going to sink a bunch of money into parts fixing the front-end, might be time to think of putting those funds toward the upgrade.
http://www.machinesoflovinggrace.net/gmc/frontend/
You'll have all new CV's wheel bearings, ball joints etc.
- Much better brakes
- Much better handling
- rebuilt lower A arm
- Much beefer construction
- no more frontend bearing worries (and the sealed bearing hub assembly are readily available, just 4 bolts holds the assemble)

If it's bad (worn), replace it.
If it's not, leave it.
It won't drive any better if you replace good parts with good parts, but now is the time for a good inspection.
Of course with the boots.... if the shafts are out, then do them all as rubber parts have a life span.
The Dorman Unifit outers I got from Jim K seem good as they have extra pleats and bend better therefore.

By the time this invitation for pure panic goes out you will replace every moving part in your coach. Replace what you have identified and treat every other suggestion with a grain of salt!!

Wayne,
If the upper and lower control arm bushings have not been replaced I would
install this kit:
http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/1022
Grease the CV joints with Valvoline Synpower or Durablend grease with moly.

Rob M.

Many thanks for the replies
The 1-ton kit will be about $2k more than the parts i need. The brakes would
definitely be a nice addition but never needed more than it has now. I will
pass on the kit (for now )
The bearings were upgraded by PO (Walter Krebs) about 5 years ago - he said
he brought some expert down to his home in Grants Pass to install them for
him (maybe it was DJ?) Anyway, they seem to be ok.
Otherwise front end is all stock, i think, and running very nicely.
Ron - My end goal is to keep it running great and not leave me stranded. I
don’t mind spending the right money and time to do the proper
maintenance.
John - I buy all my parts at Jim K's - he (and his team are great)
Bob - isn’t the panic just part of the thrill of owning a GMC? - LOL
Cheers, Wayne

Excellent suggestion Rob. It is so much labor to get to the point of
replacing the ball joints, you might as well spend a little extra now and
never have to do it again in the future.
If those bushings have never been replaced, they are junk and need
replacing.

Just a quick update:
The front end is apart, cleaned and laid out on the garage floor for inspection. Everything looks really good and there is very little signs of wear on the control arms, knuckles, bearings, anchor arms, and torsion bars. All in all, doesnt seem too bad for '73 #596 off the assembly line.
Balljoints, shocks, bushings, and outer cv boots are definitely needing replacement. After working out the options and costs, seems better to replace the whole unit http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/662
If anyone is interested, i can post pictures of the control arms.
Cheers, Wayne

Cheaper to turn in the '73 arms for a set that is already refurbed than to
buy the one ton setup.
