Things I learned:

1) Canadian citizens with a US Green Card cannot get on a US Military base without an escort.

2) A Glock semi-automatic 9mm handgun is more reliable than a Smith and Wesson 38 Special revolver.

3) I now know how to jack a bullet out from a Glock.

4) Arizona gas at $3.21 a gallon is the same as California gas at $3.89 a gallon.

5) Running the fuel return line from a TBI installation into the filler pipe requires careful management of the two fuel tanks on a GMC.

6) Dachsunds appear to be the travel dog of choice.

7) The best guy to buy cutting tools from in Quartzite is the guy on the Northeast corner of the Tyson swap meet ( right at the corner of 95 and the first access road to the south)

8) Yuma, AZ is a nice town.

9) The folks at the Shangri-La RV PARK and RESORT in Yuma really appreciate a nicely turned out GMC. I highly recommend this park.

10. The folks at the PALMS RV Park in Yuma are dickheads because they have a 10 year age policy on coaches. They said to send a picture. I did. It was one of my a** bending over. Didn't hear back.

11) Women who open carry a pistol are kinda hot!!

12) There is a gun shop called the Second Amendment Family Gun Store just outside Bisbee, AZ. You can also learn to play a guitar there.

13) If I watch the throttle I can get 8 mpg towing the Tracker in our 23.

14) Sierra Vista, AZ has a lot of gun shops.

15) Apparently every time President Obama gives a speech gun sales go up.

16) For some reason the coach with the new 1 TON front end does not like the same tire pressures as the OEM setup. I dropped it from 65 to 60 psi and it rode much better. I have no idea why this is so.

17) A Geo Tracker 4x4 with offroad tires and limited slip diff really sucks in the Glamis sand dunes.

Trip was great, SoCal to Sierra Vista and back with no issues. Howell TBI/EBL continues to truck along nicely. Used a little more oil than normal. Steve F suspects I'll need valve guides in a while. With 112,000 miles I suspect he is right. Be a good time to replace the timing chain and water pump as they are all OEM. I may drill some holes in the Curtis fiberglass fan shroud to dump some air. With the aluminum radiator I might be running a bit too cold.

Looking forward to Casa de Fruta in late April.

Thanks

The problem is that the front fuel tank gets all the return from the fuel
injection making the tank level go slow. When you get low on that tank and
switch to the rear tank the EFI return still goes to the front tank,
therefore the back tank drains in a big hurry. You then have to switch back
to the front tank where you will find it at now 1/2 full because of the
return to the front tank. I think one of the the guys on the Net has a
system where the fuel returns to the tank you are drawing from all the time
giving you a much better look at the where you are fuel wise.

Gary, my answer to your problem with the return is to never let both tanks get below half. I need a break every couple hundred miles anyway so I stop for fuel. Learned to not get too low on fuel out in the middle of North Dakota a few years back, on highway 12. There are not a lot of stations on that road so never look to save a couple bux on a fillup just down the road. We coasted into a gas station that day. Lesson learned.
Thanks for the information.

I've never had a revolver jam but I have had many automatics of different calibers and manufacturers jam. For reliability I'll go with a revolver.

Has anyone seen or have any experience with the S&W Bodyguard .380? I carry a cheap noname .380 when I fly commercially, or drive my GMC out of state. I'm thinking about buying this one to replace it. It has a built in lazer sight just like my 5 round .38 Special S&W.

Cheaper Than Dirt had them on the front page of a recent flyer and sold out all of their stock in two days. I'm on their waiting list if or when they get any more. My daughter is also interested in one to replace the Makarov .380 she carries. The S&W is lighter.

As far as Canadians getting on a military base, things have changed since I was in. American citizens can't get on any more without an escort unless you are retired military.

Having the return dumping into one tank while pulling from the other does create problems.  To eliminate draining 1 while filling the other, we tied the drain ports together on the 2 tanks with a stubby 90 deg. fitting and a 3/8@ steel line between the 2.  This way, the 2 tanks are always sharing fuel so no matter where the fuel is returned, both tanks see the same fuel and level.  Yes, this messes up somewhat the need to have 2 senders, a solenoid and all that mess but like Dan said, you really do not want to run a FI system out of fuel-- bad Juju!

Live long and prosper. Get rid of the boat anchors and buy a Glock. No
jams or problems in over 10,000 rounds expended.

I got this selector valve as it has a return valve as well to return fuel to the same tank.

http://www.jcwhitney.com/motor-driven-fuel-tank-selector-valve/p2005712.jcwx

Mine still returns through the fuel filler line as I haven't gotten around to running the necessary lines to the tanks.

I also follow Dan's idea of fill-up at 1/2 tank. My back is seizing up by then anyway.

As far as 9mm goes, New York PD is by far the largest Agency in the country, and they issue 9mm. As does LAPD, and a host of others, including the US Military and our NATO Allies.

Jim, that makes sense but do you have any worries about something hitting
the fittings and tube and knocking them off or do you add some sort of
protection. I agree that is seems silly to have all the extra fuel lines,
switch and senders when in effect you are just burning the same gas out of
two tanks.

Thanks,

Ken, the bodyguard is a great little gun, especially for a carry gun in a womans purse. With no hammer exposed to hang in the purse. My wife keeps her hand around it as she walks in the wal- mart lot after dark. I bought it for her after a lady encountered some purse thieves locally and started shooting at them. They caught the thieves after she managed to put two holes in the trucks tailgate as they were running for their lives. I personally prefer a 45 even though it is a pain to remove it from the holster to drive a car. (Less chance for a trial!!) Evil or Very Mad

I have a CC permit, but don't carry - cos I can throw a pistol about as accurately as I can shoot one.  When I travel to seamy place - particularly at night, I bring my old Remington Wingmaster loaded with #4 shot.  A long gun isn't concealable by definition, no permity required.  Don't hafta aim carefully in the dark.  And if you knock someone down with a transmitter behind them, the #4 scratches and dents the cabinet, but doesn't penetrate and take it off the air.  It sits nicely to the left of the driver's seat in the GMC.

Subject: Re: [GMCnet] Trip Report and Things I learned
