I just purchased a couple of fitting for rear air line system that are quick connections. Slide the tube into the fitting and you are done. I got them for repair if needed but I am not sure they would be good for long term use. Has anyone ever used them.

The dealer said they are used on truck air brakes so I guess they are reliable. You can remove them by pushing them in but it is not as easy as it sounds to remove them.

If you mean the "Prestolok" ones, I've used them. They seem to be working well and are DOT approved. I purchased them at the "Parker" store.

I had some of the ones with the plastic locks on the ends, those leaked very easily.

While searching for leaks with this last re-do of the airbags i found where a quick connect had been used to repair a line, its a full brass quick connect that has been there at least 4 years and it is not leaking.

I preferred the compression fittings, but lots of truckers and truck shops are happy with the quick connects.

I used them on my GMC when I had it. They worked very well. Mitch in Tacoma owns it now, and he may be able to say if they have held up OK. JR Slatten Air Valves used the same push on fittings, and JR's stuff is first class.

The parker ones are supposed to be better than the brass compression fitting ones.

So say the low rider guys.
they tested them

But im more concerned with long term leak resistance which is hard to test

Art,

Before you push the tube into the fitting look at the first 1/2" or so of the tubing to make sure it is not damaged / scratched in
any way, shape, or form. It's not a bad idea to put a bit of oil on your fingertips and then rub the end of the tube before you
insert it.

Here's a link to the Parker Hannifin catalog; the first couple of pages that show you how they are made, how to install, and remove
them.

Regards,
Rob M.

Thanks for that link, Rob. This is the first time I've heard of using the
"stainless steel tube supports" with 1/4" tube & press fittings. NONE of
mine have them. :-(

Ken,

That makes two of us! I have a hard copy of the PH catalog and found the page, I hadn't READ it.

However, I reckon if your system doesn't leak it might come under, "if its not broke don't fix it."

At least it won't be hard to disassemble the fittings and install the tubes! ;-)

Rob M.

I have a quick-release fitting on the line going into the tank from the compressor. Seems to work well, however there only seems to be a little O ring in there. My tank is in the cupboard, not outside so its clean and dry.

I'd be wary about using them out on the airbags with all the dust, dirt and vibration.

Bruce,

Interesting thought, they are called Prestomatic Air Brake Push-In Fittings and as such I would think they would be OK.

However, being the anally retentive pedantic bastard that I am you have motivated me to call Parker Hannifin Customer Service when I
get back to the USA next week and see what they say!

Rob M.

Leigh Harrison uses only those fittings for his 4-Bag system, based
according to him on extensive consultation with Parker-Heflin.

After Rob's posing, I got to thinking, "Prestolok", might not be the one's I bought. Memory was wrong as I checked and have the "Prestomatic" ones with steel housing, no thermoplastic as the "Prestolok" have.

Some people love then and some hate them. I got a couple of them from a friend who works on hydraulic and air stuff all the time. He loves them. I could ever get them to quit leaking.

Install them and if they do not leak they should be OK. I personally won't use them. It is kind of like arguing about which is worse Chryslers or Fords. You will get opinions on both sides.

They also make:

Rob, I guess I'm confused too. The ones I do not have are "Prestolok" like these, some of which have thermoplastic housings.

After your post, I must have had "Prestomatic" on my mind and typed that instead of what I actually have. I actually have "Prestolok Plus" fittings which I thought had a steel housing but are actually nickel plated brass.

Mike,

I'm UN-confused!

I followed one of the links you provided below to this link:

http://www.parker.com/portal/site/PARKER/menuitem.338f315e827b2c6315731910237ad1ca/?vgnextoid=8d247f71ad65e210VgnVCM10000048021dacRC
RD&vgnextfmt=EN&vgnextcat=FSC+US+CATALOG&vgnextcatid=7653&vgnextdiv=687547&productcategory=productline

I scrolled down and found:

PRESTOLOK COMPOSITE - INCH
PRESTOLOK COMPOSITE - METRIC
PRESTOLOK II
PRESTOLOK PLUS
PRESTOMATIC-INCH
PRESTOMATIC-METRIC
PRESTOWELD
PTC

As you can see there's a raft of the bloody things!

AFAIK as long as they have a pressure rating of over 150 PSI they're OK to use in the rear suspension system. It is possible that
one type would work better than others but without any proper testing that's anybody's guess!

BTW nice find on the catalog.

Rob M.

I've had one air leak problem since acquiring my coach, and that proved to be a brass reducer to a pressure gauge under the hood.
Other than that, she holds air well.
Good job Rob.

I had dinner with a friend who owns a truck (big diesel) repair facility and they specilize in air brake repairs. I happened to ask him what he thought of the quick connect tubing fittings and he said he never uses them, they always use the compression type fittings when repairing or replacing air lines.

All of the new trucks we have bought in the last 10 years have the prestolock fittings. We have very little trouble with them unless the tubing is pulled too tight. I work with them every day and like them.
