Netters,
A while back I bought a set of drill bits from fellow GMCer Ken Booth (Top
Gun Tool in Havasu City, AZ). I took his word for it that they're the best
drills he's ever used. Background: I drill a lot of holes. Repairing
those old crusty, rusty lower control arms requires using up a lot of
standard 5/16 and 3/8 bits and I've been through a ton of them. Enter
Norseman Magnum drill bits. I was so impressed with these that I ordered
another full set from Ken before he shut down his business completely.
Yesterday was the toughest test yet. I mounted 4, 5' sections of Etrack
to my auto trailer. Each required 60 holes to be drilled in the 1/4" steel
diamond plate runners on my trailer. One bit made it through 180 holes
before my grip on the drill tired and I moved off center while breaking
through. The bit didn't break, it bent. On every hole I was using max
speed and max feed so all of the chips were blue. The bit was so hot after
just a couple holes you could smell the paint burn everytime I indexed to a
new hole. These things are AWSOME and if you're looking for the last set
of bits you'll ever buy, I recommend you buy a set.
Oh, I forgot to mention that all the bits have three ground flats on them
so there is never any chuck slippage and they always go back in the hole in
the index they came out of. Incredible drill bits!

I don't buy sets of drill bits. There are so many in there that I never use. I will pay extra for very good drill bits.

Ken,

There's a pile of stuff in the corner of our bedroom that's going to be heading for the USA. The good news is that I got my Frequent
Flyer Mile Business Class upgrade both directions and am allowed THREE seventy pound pieces of luggage Plus one 40 pound carry on
FREE!

I normally go to Goodwill or the Salvos and buy suitcases to bring back.

For those of you who travel be advised that airline luggage has limited coverage which is ridiculously low. Also if you pack
something in a box it is not insured to the same amount. If you have bought expensive souvenirs (like parts for a GMC) it's best to
buy travel insurance that covers baggage loss. Also it is a good idea to check and find out if your health insurance covers you when
you travel. Australian Medicare does not cover me outside Australia (except for a few countries that have reciprocal agreements -
the USA is not one of them)

Personally I buy the max cover I can when I travel, being an old fart - UNLIMITED medical is the most important. As far as the
luggage goes with that policy I'm covered up to $5000.00 and it would be hard to spend that much on stuff for a GMC that would fit
or be light enough to bring back as luggage! For example on my upcoming trip I will be gone for a bit over two months and the travel
insurance will cost $384.00 or $128 per month. That works out to $1536 a year and I'll bet a lot of you pay more than that. I
remember the year Helen and I retired (2001) we lived in Houston and group insurance for us that was 80 / 20 cost us $7500 and I was
55 and she was 54.

Regards,
Rob M.

I think the only HF bits I've ever bought are the step bits; they're pretty
good. Maybe not Greenlee good, but for a fraction the cost, darned good.
:-)

You about got your bag packed? Or maybe, coming this way, I should say
UNpacked?

Ken H.

Ken,

If you look just below the Norseman logo you'll see "Link to Manufacturer's site" click on it and it brings up:

http://www.norsemandrill.com/

I clicked on that link and went to the Norseman website to see if there was any sales blurb on the drills advising what material
they were made of and all that I could find out is that they are High Speed Steel.

I downloaded the 12mb catalog and found the same info there. No sales pitch! Amazing! I surmised that Steve has found a company that
MUST make a damn good product!

Now for some blasphemy!

Along with a bunch of drill sets made in the USA I have one of these here in Sydney:

http://www.harborfreight.com/115-piece-cobalt-drill-bit-set-47653.html

Despite it being made in China it is high quality. However, since it is cobalt you have to be carefully as the bits are easily
snapped if you tilt the drill.

I carry the set below in Double Trouble in the USA:

http://www.harborfreight.com/29-piece-135-degree-split-point-cobalt-drill-bit-set-36891.html

It too is high quality.

Regards,
Rob M.

Hi Rob.
Just a FYI, our med ins as Canadians age 68 & 71, not on any meds, for 4 months out of country in the U.S. cost us just over $1200.

Norm,

Guess Aussies are healthier than Canadians! ;-)

I even declared that I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure and am on meds for it and it still only cost $384!

However, I did find out that once I turn 66 the price will go up. I ain't askin' as it will get me upset!

And when you turn 71 it will go up again. Our ins. is to cover over & above what our government ins. pays. It's socialized In Ontario.

I had a large project that required lots of 5/16 holes done on the drill
press. I was having a hard time getting through the steel and the bits
were hot, chips blue - screeching noise. Then a machinist friend told me
to slow the speed down and that I shouldn't be producing chips but long
curly-cues. Moved the belts on the drill's pulleys, lo and behold, the
drills started going through the steel like buttah... FWIW.

Good to see this thread morph back to what it started out to be. The same
GMCer that sold me the bits, also sold me what he thought was the best
cutting oil he'd ever used or sold. I bought a bottle and it is something
else. You know when the bits are getting dull when they start to squeal
and no longer cut. One drop of this stuff and it begins cutting like new.
Incredible for tapping also. If I remember, I'll look up the brand later
when I head for the shop.

I had a large project that required lots of 5/16 holes done on the drill press. I was having a hard time getting through the steel and the bits were hot, chips blue - screeching noise. Then a machinist friend told me to slow the speed down and that I shouldn't be producing chips but long curly-cues. Moved the belts on the drill's pulleys, lo and behold, the drills started going through the steel like buttah... FWIW.

To add to that, a machinist told me that most people turn small bits too fast. He said slow is better for them too.

Dan,

Do a Google search for Drill Feed & Speed and you'll find lots of good info on this subject.
