According to reliable sources, P.T. Barnum never did say "There's a sucker born every minute".
That does not make the statement any the less accurate.

He did say "Every crowd has a silver lining." Interesting thing to ponder.

Matt,

You'll appreciate this story.

When I was living in Hong Kong and building hot rod Harleys in my spare time my neighbor (vice president of marketing for the Regal
Hotel Group) and fellow Harley owner would drop by when he'd see me working in the garage.

On evening he walked in all excited and had this strange looking object in his hand. It was oddly shaped metal tube which appeared
to be brass and it was surrounded with a wire mesh. He showed it to me and told me that this device if put into a gas tank would
increase the cars mileage by 25-30%!

Since he was a close friend I bit my tongue to keep from laughing and asked him where he got it, how it worked, etc. He told me that
one of his people got it from an "electronics engineer." It worked by aligning the atoms in the gas so that they would combust more
efficiently. Once again being polite I suggested he give it a try and see what happened.

About a month later he popped in again and I asked him what he had discovered, he told me that it didn't improve anything! I noted
"sorry to hear that." He said it hadn't cost him anything so he didn't care.

Fast forward 10 years (post 9-11), I have retired to Sydney, and he has retired to the Gold Coast (near Brisbane). I get an excited
call from him telling me he's met an inventor up in the Gold Coast who has invented a black box that can be installed in and
aircraft and if it is hijacked ground control can "push a button" and take over control of the aircraft and land it. I asked him if
he had any technical information on the black box he advised that the inventor won't release any details as he fears his idea will
be stolen. Red lights begin to flash in my head accompanied by alarm bells! I told him that while that was possible I assured him
that if it was feasible aircraft avionics / flight control companies would have built one already. Evidently he believed me as
several months later he sent me a clipping out of a Gold Coast newspaper noting that the "inventor" had been arrested for fraud and
thanked me for "saving his neck."

Regards,
Rob M.

If I would just let the metaclorians do their thing and the force could be with me I would not have to remember the Cobiashi synario to keep me from buying that product. The product appears to be just like the Cobiashi synario in other words a "no win" situation.

There must be a lot of money in this crap. It never ends.

You are right.
Back when I was in school we just fed the T-Rex vitamin rich plants, no wait....

Well when the cave man found he could move easier with round wheels instead of square ones, that was a goofy idea

And who would believe if you angled the front of a car from the normal boxy Model "T" configuration that you would go faster... SNAKE OIL

Ebay had a block of wood that would go under the gas pedal ( a special model just for police cruisers Very Happy ), it prevented you from putting your foot into the carborator and saved gas - really?

When I worked for the power industry, one of the managment fellas come to me with a copper item in his hand. It had a copper tube going through a larger one which circulated hot coolant. The explanation was " when the fuel is heated, the gas burns cleaner and increases mileage." AFter a month or so, he threw it away.

I was working for FUJI MACHINE AMERICA when one of the techs come up with a stainless propeller looking device. It was supposed to be placed in the carb throat and would make the in flow air like a tornado, mixing fuel fully before entering the cylinder... He paid around $60 for it. I knew he knew better but what do you say... He said it actually made the MPG go down, and threw it away.

And we must not forget the POWER PLUG, a spark plug that is designed to fire a super charge into the cylinder to increase mileage...

And the fuel line magnet that sets the molecules in a position for the best burn and increased mileage.....

There is a market because we all want better and we hope the next one will work. Some of us will look at it, snarl and say "snake oil" but there are others that will buy it and hope for the best. It is never ending, the items will continue to show up on the market and unless they really scam a huge part of the market, the government won't step in to prosecute. Its an open market, but what if, what if it really worked?? Its the "what if" that keeps them buying.

Everyone wants their own version of a perpetual motion machine.

Unobtanium.

Vaporium.

Expensium.

The laws of physics can't be bent by a charlatan looking to make a few dollars, but people will always look, and buy, because someone, somewhere is screwing them out of something.

My daily driver is a '05 Mustang GT. 300 horsepower. I get 25 mpg on the highway.

All the technology existed to do this back in the 70's, it just was not practical to put a $5,000 computer in the trunk of a $3,800 car to go from 15 mpg to 25, and from 150 hp to 300hp in about 281 cubic inches (or 289). The laws of physics were never bent of pushed, just artfully applied.

Proof positive of the digital revolution is the efficiency we are wringing out of legacy systems from internal combustion engines to electric motors.

If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is...... and all extreme statements are wrong including this one.

When I was a younger man and newly married, my new father in law got a
subscription to Hemmings Motor News, and J.C. Whitney Co. After reading
through the J.C. Whitney catalog, he noticed a number of devices that were
Gur-an-teed to improve mileage and increase performance and make you an
instant chick magnet. He reasoned that he needed to buy at least 10 of the
gadgets that promised a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy. That way he
could drive into gas stations and have them remove fuel from his tank so
that it would not run out on the ground. He, in fact, did order enough of
the various devices to accomplish this and when they arrived, proceeded to
install them on his favorite willys jeepster with the famous hurricane "F"
head 6 cylinder engine. Oh my, to no avail, his mileage remained unchanged
after the install of all the stuff. It changed his faith in J.C. Whitney.
He never purchased from them again. I was in the position of bystander when
all this was going on, and with his propensity to fly off the handle due to
his Dr Jekyl/ MR Hyde personality traits, never brought it up again. He was
an intelligent man, WW2 Navy Vet, College Grad, Adcock's Diesel School
Grad. and a member of the Merchant Marine Service. Very bright fellow. Had
zero sales resistance. I still find humor in some of his antics. He died in
1994 at the age of 59, 3 weeks after he retired. Kinda like a 2 sided coin,
a lot of good, and some bad thrown in as well. Take the time to attend some
GMC rallys this year and stop to enjoy life. It is too short as it is. Hug
your wife, or some one else's (be careful here <Grin>) pet your dog, help
out a fellow GMCer with a problem. Smile a lot. Have a drink now and then
with friends. Live it, every day.
