Just got it in the mail. Best 12 dollars spent in the world.

This tape really maps out the onan troubleshooting.
shows you where everything is and does.
I miss him and only talked with him on the phone once.
He said come on over and lets talk about your new GMC palm Beach.
My thoughts go out to his wife and family god bless them.
This dvd is priceless for onan the barbarian. Duane won that war.

Indeed. I got to know Duane around Christmas of '99. We were
on our way from California to League City, Texas to visit my
wife's family. About 100 miles west of Houston, the left
torsion bar broke. You can read the story on my Web page:

http://home.earthlink.net/~tmaki/gmctrip2.htm

Anyways, I was a GMC mailing list subscriber at the time,
and after putting out a message about our troubles, Duane
pointed me in the direction of somebody that could help. And
he was a pleasure to work with at the rally when I shot the
video.

I actually have another video of him at a later rally
discussing things electrical, but that was never released.

He was truly a kind and generous soul, and is certainly missed.

Toby,

I'd forgotten about your TB failure. I just re-read your tale. You didn't
mention having found anything to indicate the cause of the failure. Did
you happen to notice anything? Like maybe it rubbed on the diagonal frame
brace?

Just trying to asemble data. :-)

Speaking of The late Dr. Onan, there was rumor that he had a simulator to test control boards. If he did, did somebody get a that so we still have access to it??

Early in my GMC time, Duane assisted me as well.

Ken,

Yes, there was a noticeable wear spot right at the break.
That wear spot was exactly at the spot where the diagonal
brace crosses.

I examined it as closely as my 8x loupe would allow. Right
at the break, and just inside was a tiny vein of rust. My
impression was that a stress crack developed at the wear
point, over time allowing water in and corrosion to develop.

I took the broken pieces with me to one of the GMCWS rallies
and showed them to several folks. They all were puzzled
saying they had never seen a broken torsion bar.

There really is nothing under there that would cause such an
"injury" to the torsion bar except the diagonal brace. I
found that the right side has the same wear mark (still
original TB). The diagonal braces on both sides are bent in
an arc with the ends near the mounting bolts split on the
short sides of the channel.

I have tried on many occasions to replicate the actions of
the phenomenon. It's really hard to be under there and push
and pull on the frame enough to cause the brace to contact
the TB. But I can see how a combination of incorrectly
adjusted front ride height, gross overweight conditions, and
hard "jouncing" could be factors. When this happened, I had
owned the coach only three months, so had no idea of its
history. Other than driving it back from New York, and
around locally a few times, this was the first time we'd had
it out on the road.

I posted some years back when this topic came up that folks
might want to examine the TB at the diagonal brace. Look for
a wear mark and perhaps do a more thorough examination.

I know it is a rare occurrence. That's what makes it so hard
to diagnose. It's one of those kinds of things that gives no
warning. Although not necessarily a catastrophic failure, it
gets your attention at 60mph. Everybody else in the coach is
inclined to comment in a loud way, too.

There's no MTBF spec on these TBs - they're not supposed to
break. Just have to take a look see and make your best guess.

No link, but you can get it the old fashioned way. Just send
a check for $12.00 to:

Intermedia
PO Box 4535
Riverside, CA 92514

or Paypal to: tmaki@earthlink.net
(well... I guess Paypal isn't that old fashioned)

Be sure to send your mailing address.

Thanks.

Please edit that one as well if you wish and i would help pay
for it if you need more money to do it. This info is much easier
to understand when someone shows you that knows.
Thanks for sending me this dvd, the info is a great advantage.
I will give you $50 for the first dvd of the other stuff if you want
to help inspire you to do it. let me know :-)

Thanks, Toby. That's very interesting. It's always difficult to convince
people (even me) that a simple injury such as that rubbed place can create
a stress riser and eventual failure.

I've seen a couple of coaches (including the GMC my son has) on which
careless jacking or some other cause resulted in the diagonal braces being
up near or touching the torsion bars. You're right that everyone should
check for that condition -- and their TB's for injury if they've touched.

Matt,

I know nothing about the simulator Duane probably had, but I built one for
my own use 10 years or so ago. After removing my Onan, I passed it on to
Monte Jestes. Since Duane's demise, I've been kind of hoping Monte would
volunteer to become Mr. Onan, Jr. -- with no indication that he had any
interest in becoming a repair source.
