HELP! On Thursday, Alan, with his wife & two sons, will show up here
planning to re-felt their GMC windows. Naturally, they'll expect me to
tell them how. BIG PROBLEM: I ain't never done no winders! I copped out
and replaced them all with Motorhome Enhancements' new ones. We'll be
replacing the right main window with a good one I got with the coach about
6 years ago. That one appears to have good felts, and I know how to do the
replacement. But, all the others BADLY need the replacement seals I bought
from Jim B about 5 years ago.

Does anyone know where there's a good tutorial for us to follow?

Ken,

Don't know about a tutorial, but when I did ours, I learned from Jim B the
importance of removing and resealing the glass before trying to replace the
rubber. Not home right now, or could tell you the "sealer" reccomended to
use for this purpose. The rubber is installed while the goop" is still
setting, which allows the glas to move some and let the rubberseat properly. I
tried everything else first, even took a window to a glass shop to have
them do it after I was failing and they didn't have any better luck, but after
using Jim's method, everything just fell into place and the job wasn't too
bad at all. Your thumbs do get a little sore though! There are spacer
wedges that are important to reuse - so don't discard them when removing the
old goo - as they kind of set the proper location for the glass to set in the
frames.

I don't have a tutorial but I rebuilt all of the side windows in my 77 royale and it wasn't too difficult. There are no felts in the big windows just butyl holding the glass and weatherstrip on the outside with a plastic slide top and bottom for the movable glass. If the windows are still holding the frame the strip can be pulled back a bit and then chased by the new strip. If you need to replace the division bar felt then the division bar needs to be removed.
1 remove screen
2 remove movable window run chanels
3 remove movable window like a house window lift up then out at bottom
4 remove outer weatherstrip several inches back from division bar
5 remove screws or rivets holding division bar and tap off of the edge of fixed glass(small plastic hammer). (Might want to have someone hold the glass so it does not move) Tap one end of division bar away from fixed glass while leaving other end stationary till it can be lifted out of frame.
6 clean goop off division bar and edge of fixed glass
7 remove felt and slide in new(cut new one to same length as removed one)
8 re install division bar with fresh bead of eurethane and rivets(screws)
9 install new outer weatherstrip

Ken,

What year coach?

The link to JimB's site with instructions seems to be for the early windows. I THOUGHT Alan's coach was '75 or newer, and would require different instructions.

In either case, call JimB.

For info: I changed just the felts (not the seals around the stationary windows) on my '73. It is very similar to replacing the felts on the cockpit windows. (See earlier linked photos... ) I have no experience with repair of the newer style windows.

Mike,

You're right, I failed to include that Alan's is a '76 X-Palm Beach.

When I checked the spare window we plan to install in place of the
glass-slipped RF window, I found that it has felt runners, so I guess it's
an early design. Should we even bother to install it or repair the slipped
glass?

The photos on JimB's site are for a 75 or later coach. The early
coaches have no rubber inserts on the outside (other than the outer
edge of the rubber/felt channels the windows ride in). The
early windows also have the splines that need sealing:

Ken, the early windows have multi-part frames. The moving window is on the outside, and have the latch on the leading edge, just like the cockpit windows, just larger.

They are very hard to get sealed. Plus, they are also not the easiest to use. To open you slide open the screen and unlatched... if you are lucky you'll be able to open the window enough. You then slide the screen back shut.

I find it easier to unlatch and slightly open the window then go outside to open the windows. I also go out to close the windows.

I would not install an early window in a newer coach if I could avoid it.

I have been able to get the slipped "fixed" window back into position by tapping with a hammer and a block of wood. But it was on the early windows.

For the 75+ windows, I would call JimB for the best advice.
