Hey All;

We've started out winter trip. Going to CA to visit the kids (and
more importantly the grandkids), then on to Pismo Beach for some sand
camping, then on to Quartzsite (I know, it will be late but Diana
REALLY wants to so some bead shopping), then on to Death Valley for a
buggy run, then head home. BUT, my transmission isn't shifting into
low after coming to a stop. I can manually shift it and it will go
into 1st gear. Otherwise it just takes off in 2nd geqr. The
transmission is topped off and the fluid is red and looks good. Any
ideas??? Thanks in advance...

The return spring for the 1-2 shift valve is very light, so almost anything can make it hang up and not downshift.  The two most probable are some dirt in the valve (valve body removal and cleaning) or sticking in the governor that prevents it from going to zero pressure.  I'd start with the valve body first.  You could try just manually selecting 1st for a while - you might get lucky and the dirt could work its way out.  Regardless, I can't see where it is anything internal and expensive.  Just to verify, I assume it does stay in 1st when you put it back in drive and then upshifts normally, right?

I fought that issue on an internmittant basis for a couple of years. It would do it for a few thousand miles and then for the next 2000 to 3000 it would work OK.

I finally adjusted the modulator 1/2 turn (in I believe) as a guess. I have not seen the problem again.

Gary,

I had the same problem when I replaced the original transmission with a rebuilt one from Jasper. It would not go into first gear when stopped and was in second gear which was very slow and if on a grade would not move at all. I could get it into low gear manualy, then shift into drive after getting started and everything was OK. Jasper said it was impossible, but provided another transmission for me. The bad part was in less than 3,000 miles the new transmission self destructed on a grade and blew the hose off the vent and caused a fire. No more Jasper for me.

Hey All;

Thanks for the great info. Yes, I can downshift and everything is
OK. It did this during the last trip, but only when it was cold. Now
it's almost every time. I did get in touch with MannyT, and will talk
with him tomorrow when I see him. I'll keep driving it until then.
Again, thanks for the stories. Makes me feel better.

Gary,
When you leave Corning have breakfast at Nancy's Airport Cafe in Willows ( across from WalMart just off the freeway). Or if your're later stop in Williams at Granzella's fo a sandwich and ice cream.

My transmission developed those symptoms on the way back from SOOR at Mapleton several years ago. A few months later the tranny failed completly and I had to get a new one from Manny.

Good luck.

Hey Gene;

Thanks for the tips on the eating places. Have never tried Nancy's.
I'll see if Diana wants to stop (if she ever wakes up). Gransellas is
a very nice place to eat.

I've tried to get a transmission out of Manny for 3 years. He says
as long as mine is working he's not going to sell me one. Maybe this
time. I can only hope...

I got stuck in first gear the first day i drove it after manny put the new trans in for $1700, 3:50. I hope it does not do it any more.

it looks like the the plastic speedo drive gear could be bad from what i read here. Lets pray it is not. If it is how hard is it
to put a new one in, do i have to tow it 800 miles from la to manny. That thing looks plastic and made to break its teeth.

why would someone get stuck in first gear and not get out of it. This is it right. the plastic transmission governor gear, yellow like
plastic cam looking thing. How do i get this, i guess of course Jim in Freemont, but how do i get it in, miguel does not work on
transmissions. Maybe it will go away. right, wrong. ????

You were a little low on fluid and it wouldn't let you shit.
That amount for the tranny with power drive is a good deal and if it
included installation it was a great deal.
Anyway its not the same problem.
Its the governor gear that if it breaks its impossible to remove if
you have headers, The header has be be loosened.
Its 500 miles from here to San Diego and you are over one hundred
miles north of San Diego so it would be less than 400 miles from here.
Yes, you can get the governor gear from Jim in Fremont or from me for
$3.00 plus shipping.
I guess you're talking space ship miles <G>

If it is a governor gear, That is an easy replacement. If you can not do it yourself have Miguel call his buddy Jim K. or Manny for directions. I'm sure Manny or Jim will put one in the mail to you. I believe they are less than $5.00. Miguel replaced Dan Gregg's trans so he sure can install a governor gear in one.

I fail to understand the problem here. All three of these vendors will work to help you.

It was a miracle that you could help me that day and i thank yo very much. I love you manny
for that, i will never forget that you came all the way down to do that while you were at that convention in San Deigo.
I am not bitching, I was just stating the case that it was great that you came when i bought it and it stuck in
first so close to MMGMC- broke about 4 mile from monte clair in first gear on the freeway and i drove it about
5 miles in first to get to monte clair. I was very lucky and i thank you. It was low on fluid from just being filled most likely.
I am very happy Miguel is still working on it etc. It if still does it when i pick it up i will let you know
and i do not expect you to come all the way down here for me. It is most likely that little plastic
yellowish gear thingy do hicky etc. But Manny i owe you more for what you did, please do not
get me wrong. I will always thank you for what you did. It is not your fault for sure what ever it is you
did the best i could hope for and i thank you. mickey :-) It is a good price thank you. If it happens when i
pick it up i will ask you what to do and have someone down here fix it. Miguel does not work on the tranny.

I have the greatest respect for your integrity and i am honored that you helped me. thank you for your integrity. Mickey

Let me thank you again, THANK YOU BIG TIME> mickey

I am talking about miles from miguel's i think that is what you are talkiing about space ship miles.

I drove it to miguels and it has been there ever since. it is there now. He has been working on it since on other stuff.

Bye the way hello! and thank you again manny. :-) say hello to your wife and family I only got to say hi at the star bucks
for about 10 minutes when i paid you. Thank you - thank you - thank you communicate with you later and i am A very happy
camper and honored to meet you thank you. M.

I believe that the problem is not the gear, but the governor.
Manny, please clarify.

I think i ordered one already -

Transmission Govenor Gear - (A116)

I ordered it just in case already it is in the mail since friday or so from freemont.
I know manny is a tranny manny god and i believe in god. I would not let him
come down here for that, i would do it and happy to pay someone else to do it.

I was very lucky when i bought this Palm Beach the seller told me the transmission slipped.
I read around and found manny and called him about it. the seller was in San Diego which is
100 miles from me south east. I called manny and he stated that he had a transmission and that
he had to go to a convention in San Diego that same week end i was to buy it or so. He stated he
could change it for me with a new 3:50 ratio and on the way back stop at anaheim ca. and i pay him.
I think or i left the 1700 with the seller for him i can't remember now, but we gotter duune. Cable talk.
When i picked it up drove to miguel's for a brake booster was leaking. It stuck in first about 5 miles away
on the freeway behind a truck. But it may have been low on fluid, I have left there and been paying
miguel since fixing things, brake booster, change front windshield, steering box shaft replacement,
air bags now being done one blew in the parking lot, batteries are down now, getting er dune.
I thank them both for help ing get off the ground and look forward on picking it up when miguel
gets it all together for me. they above is what i ordered just in case. I am lucky for all this to happen
and i thank them both. I can't wait to get it going and move into it for the summer for my office
and home to just try it out that way and save rent for while and surf malibu this summer while i run my company.

I was lucky to run into these generals of the gmc and get help, let no one put asunder what the gmc has put together.

: those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder.

they are all far away from anaheim where i am, miguel dosn't work on transmissions, I am not sure what is wrong with it any way.
I have not been able to drive it since i bought it from working and getting up to miguel's. It may just be low on fluid. It was
just put in new by manny and stuck in first on the way to miguels from san diego, it has been there about 2 months i think or so.
I will not get it till miguel gets the air bags replaced and drive it,, and see what happens. it has been parked since it was stuck in first gear.
We shall see if it happens again when i pick it up. thank you mickey - I talked with a guy that does my vans he is block from me.
He can do it if i need it done. we shall see. It is not a big deal. :-)

Drove mine for 10 years that way with zero problems. Never thought you'd

JimK charges $24 for them, plus tax/shipping:

Looks like the price went up. I should have invested in Governor Gears instead of the Stock Market.
