Hi All:

We have a very original,early,1976 Coachmen Royale wth a front kitchen that we are trying to keep as "original" as we can. The counter tops are brown "Butcher Block" pattern. Mary would like to have an extension to the counter top towards the back of the drivers seat. We are looking for a piece of that material that could be made into a hinged extension. The counter top or even just the surfacing material would be welcome.

Thanks

Jack & Mary Kincaid, Castro Valley, CA

Lowe's or Home Depot. The pattern may not be available any more. That's just standard "Formica" material (aka laminate).

Sooner or later, all coaches leak. Counter tops are often around water intense areas. IMO you should avoid counter tops that are made of particle board with laminate tops. The particle board easily absorbs water and swells. Then the laminate separates which exasperates the problem. IMO, counter tops should be solid water proof material. A hard rain allowed rain in and swelled our counter top. The PO did not seal the sink around the rim so top swelled. Down around the edges where water can surface tension back under the top, the particle board swelled. In all places, the laminate has separated and made a mess of our counter top. JMHO

Jack,

The counter top of the Avion is chipboard so I used the longest screws I could and predrilled them with a VERY small drill also!

I got the cutting board from one of the kitchen stores. It was NOT cheap! Sorry I don't remember the name of the store.

Hi All:

Thanks for the helpfull information re. countertops. I really would prefer
to get a piece of the original brown, laminate, Butcher Block pattern to
match the rest of the counter top. Our Coach was in storage for 18 years and
the inside is "welcome to 1976" like new. We used the original 'fridge face
pannel when we put in the new 'fridge and we have the original "woven woods"
and wall panels etc. I did love the 70's and it's fun being back there when
in the "coach". I don't have enough hair anymore but maybe I'll look for
some polyester bell-botom pants to wear when camping?

Jack

Leisure Suit Jack,

As I mentioned in another post, that laminate may not still be in
production. You will have to look at the samples at a Lowe's/Home Depot or
other supplier.

However, you might contact Southland Motorhome in Georgia or other
GMC-oriented service/maintenance facility and see if they have any pieces of
countertop from a Coachmen. I had them replace our countertop four years
ago. I'm not saying they'll have ours hanging around but they may have done
others since then. They may even have a piece that has separated from the
base that may have the manufacturer and code printed on the back.

I really doubt that anyone on here has that part number in their heads or
written down anywhere. As to brand names you can check the websites of
Wilsonart or Formica. As a matter of fact, Formica is only producing
"butcherblock maple" as pattern at present. Wilsonart doesn't list anything
with "butcher" in the name. It isn't the 70's and the look of stone is in
for a few more years.

Jack,

Reading Byron's note I got another idea, if you're not going to use the extension like a cutting board you could stain lighter
butcher block to match the color of the existing bb. The block piece sizes probably wouldn't match though.

Rob M.

Jack,

Search for an rv salvage place (rv man's mall)in your area, there maybe other old SOB that may have it.

In Sacramento, Ca. there's RV Doctor George. A person can spend all day looking at items, and not see the same thing twice.
