When I start up the beast, I hear the lifters for a bit until it warms up. And even though it does get better the lifters don't seem to completly quiet down. I've tightened the bolts on the Thorley headers but they seem pretty tight already. Is there anything you guys do for this to keep that seal on the headers?

I don't see a connection between headers and lifters. My 23' has Thorleys, the PB has stock manifolds. The 23' starts and runs with a nice rear muffler rumble. The PB has under load or engine accelleratiohn a 'spit' which is almost certainly due to a blown exhaust gasket on the pax side of the engine... the alternative being a busted pax side manifold. Is this the thing you are perhaps hearing?

Tom,
Header gasket leaks closely resemble lifter ticking. Once you get a leak,
tightening doesn't seem to stop it. Your best approach is to replace the
header to head gaskets with the copper ones, or thick composition gaskets
and use red, high temp RTV on both sides. Tighten them down, then
retighten another 2-3 times after heating and cooling cycles.

I use Permatex Ultra Copper sealant on both sides of the gasket and it seems to hold up fine.

From my hot rod days I remember some plain steel headers actually had a pinging sound because of them being tubing not cast iron.

I had one lifter that tapped. Sounds just like a header leak. I added Marvel Mystery Oil, and ran it awhile. Then drained it. Then I added a can of Rislone. Noise never came back.
