Sort of takes away from the idea of the GMC. I like the easy of parking with the 26 footer.

Look at that thing....
Looks like they cut behind the passenger and added the middle of a coach.... but too long. I imagine making turns can have some exciting moments. In my mind, my 455 is already at task on the hills, that would be a bit much for me.

My thoughts

Norm,

Looks out of proportion to me, guess that's because I'm used to 23' & 26' coaches.

I missed the opportunity to buy a Buskirk 28' coach that was absolutely gorgeous.

Rob M.

I think there is a 34' GMC at Alex Sirrum's. I was in and out of it a few times, it's just kind of rotting in their lot, but I remember thinking it would be a nightmare to turn. Had extra length in front of the door and behind the bathroom.

I believe GMC had a 28' and 30' version on the drawing board at one time, I'm sure someone will pipe in. 31' seems reasonable, although instead of just cramming in extra couch space I'd have wanted some of it in the back to do front to back sleeping!

Rob,
Not enough overhang to balance the length.
Bushkirk moved the bogeys back 22" to balance the overhang.

Norm,

Turns out I was incorrect, I just reviewed my folder on it and the Buskirk I looked at was 29 feet. The seller told me Clarence
positioned the bogies to add one foot to the overhang and two feet to the wheel base.

I had been looking at other stretches but stopped when I found out in Australia the overhang can only be 60% of the wheel base.

Clarence's positioning of the bogies made it pass with flying colors.

BTW on a standard 26 foot GMC you have to remove the spare tire and bumper to meet the regulation. Once you get it inspected you can
put them back on. At least that's what the guy I bought The Blue Streak from told me.

Regards,
Rob M.

Bill Bryant may chime in but, as I recall hearing GMC had a 29-foot design
on the boards. Buskirk used the positioning (bogies moved about 24 inches)
that GMC had determined as best.

The 2-foot extensions on the rear, though popular, seem to put it out of
balance.

Also, if I recall properly, Ron Tase extended his to 32 feet. He, too, moved
the bogies rearward so the balance would be right. I believe the coach has
seen two owners since Ron sold it. I think it was at Goshen. If it wasn't
Ron's version then it was something pretty close. Ron did the extension
(moving the Onan and LP forward of the rear suspension) so he could have a
walk-around queen bed in the rear. He also had a separate shower across from
the bath module and additional storage space.

Rob...you might remember that I bought Arthur lynwoods 29.5 stretch. Arther sectioned a 3 foot piece from a donor in order to have two single beds (enough room for a king size bed). He did it right in moving the bogies back 20 in. in order to regain the balance and semetry. All wheel disc brake realy deliver.

ps. It's for sale.

Dan,

Yep!

With a name like Lynwood Arther I'll bet it gets turned around all the time!

Here's some info on the building process.

http://www.gmcclassics.com/tech/larthur/index.html

http://www.gmcclassics.com/tech/larthur/lauther-rebuild.pdf

Whoever buys it will get a nice GMC!

I would love to buy it but it's a bit big for a casket! ;-)

Looking for more pictures of Lynwood's stretch I stumbled on to this photo:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=30854

This is the one I missed out on!

All that work and it still has a rear bed you can't walk around. I like
the way the stretch is ahead of the rear wheels vice behind.

Norm,

Yep that's the one, HOWEVER, when I saw it the owner was asking $35,000! Had I known how desirable a Buskirk stretch was I would
have bought it in a heartbeat.

I have a penchant of checking into things before I buy and by the time I figger'd out what it was and called the owner I was told;
"the new owner drove it out of here this morning!"

He who hesitates is lost!

Might be prime canidate for the pull out rear end to increase the bed room space. ( the read door pulls out, stretching the bed making a reasonable sized sleeping space )

don't ya think?

I think that after 26' it's no longer a "hotrod with plumbing". The Torsion bar issues recently posted come to mind as well for this type of wheelbase stretch. I bet front traction is better though.

Possibly but with the longer length comes more weight so any improvement in traction is probably negated by having to pull more weight.

My thoughts come in right about when you are trying to climb that hill, and the 455 is working hard enough to make you slow down, I think it would be a long slow climb for any of the stretches.
