Is anyone going to Quartzite this week from the SF Bay area? I am leaving tomorrow and will be there on Monday. Where is a good place to spend the week? This is my first trip there.
Thanks,

Dan Gregg, Doug Norton and quite few others stay on BLM land at mile marker
99 just S.of I-10 on Hwy 95. Dry camping, dump nearby.

Hi Nick, Doug Norton recently posted the following: ,<<If you are considering attending quartzsite this year, The GMC Pacific Cruisers are hosting a rally from wednesday the 25th of January to the first of February at Rice Ranch (full hookups and a short walk from the RV show in the big tent and many of the booths). The GMC Pacific Cruisers sold out all their available spaces several weeks ago. I paid for one but unfortunately, I will not be able to use the space and it is being offered to any GMCer who is interested. If you want more information, I can be reached at nortocd@yahoo.com or at 208 440-8702. Doug Norton

More info: Spaces with hookups are usually all sold out in quartzsite by this time of year but there is free dry camping on remote BLM land near town or closer in, dry camping with access to water, a dump station and trash is available for about 40 dollars for 14 days. With way over 1,000 booths in town and many more in the RV tent, it is a gotta do experience. Most days are in the seventies and the town of about 1,500 sees about 400,000 visitors in January.

Thanks to all.
I am on the way and with luck will have a great week. I will check mile marker 99 on 95 and see if there is a GMC or two.

We did a quick over night stop in Quartzsite Thursday night, and stayed within a stone's throw of Dan Gregg's spot at MM 99. I say quick because we didn't arrive there until 5:30 PM and we left again at 1:00AM, in order to beat the Los Angeles area rush hour traffic. We arrived at our second stop, Simi Valley, CA. at about 5:30 AM, local time. We will do the same on the way back to Arizona and will be there on Thursday (again), leaving Friday morning for the GMCSJ rally at the Pinal County (AZ.) Fairgrounds. We will be in Quartzsite long enough to check out the big tent RV show on Thursday.

The mile marker 99 area, south of town on route 95 works perfectly for this, because it's free.

Currently on the road in Lompoc, CA.

Nick, I am sorry that we wont be there this year. MM99 is where a lot of ham radio guys gather for a week long hamfes. But, anyone may park there, it is BLM and free, as Steve mentioned. Normally, when you turn south on 95, look to your left, just as you are leaving town. There are usually 10-15 GMC coaches parked there. It is only 40 bux for 2 weeks with water and a dump a couple of miles south of there.
We were nervous our first year. Bob, the writer of the solar paper, invited Teri and I to park near them, north and east of Quartzsite at Bouse. We did and drove our car to Q. to look around and find a place to park. Bert and Fay Curtis took us in when we moved the GMC to the spot I am telling you about. We stayed with them for 4-5 days then moved on down to MM 99. The rest is history. We love the place in January and have been there 3 years previous to this year. Our plans are to be back next winter. It would have been the cheapest fun ever if we had not blown an engine in same spot the last 2 winters.
Have fun and plan to come back next winter. We'd love to see and visit with you out there.
Dan

Hi Dan,
My return to Q will be based on the fun factor of this trip, but having said that I will be able to be talked into going back, since I can piggyback it with a car show in Pomona (GNRS= Grand National Roadster Show) the end of the week. That way the drive is divided and the fun is doubled.
Regards,

Nick R.

Gene, Teri and I miss being there, a lot. It is good to be missed but hopefully someone else will pick up the "reporter" job. One of the most fun places we have ever been. I have to say that the people make it fun. I love getting into town and harrassing the guy who sells coffee for 25 cents a cup. I try to overpay him as often as I can. He puts some money into "my account" so when I come in broke I can still get a cup. Hitting the vendors to see what is new is great. Also I run thru the "bargain houses" daily just looking for stuff I might need. At times, I grab a chair and just look and listen to the folks as they walk by. Getting old timers to tell me their stories is most fascinating. We enjoy visiting others at night, around their camp fires. I hate campfires but Teri loves them. I try to drag my buddies away from the smoke and talk GMC or something, anything to get them away from the smokey fire. Sleeping is awesome out there when there are no generators close by running. I love walking out about 10 pm and looking at the starts. Awesome site. I say Quartzsite is all about the people who come from everywhere. No one cares what you are traveling in, except the busnuts, ha, joking. Folks don't care how much money you have, except the vendors, not joking. What can I say, life is great in Quartzsite, Az. during January.
Dan Smile

Dan is exactly right. It's one of my favorite venues all year. I was out there with my camping club last week, and other than the wind on Saturday, it was a great time as usual. I've been out there twice before in previous coaches; this is the first time with the GMC :

Pete,

When I was based in Paris (1978-81) I'd travel to North Africa to visit airlines there, quite often my rental car would be a 2CV.
With the lack of maintenance they were a handful to drive!

I have a friend in NZ that is shipping his 2CV to South America to take on a tour.

Look what I found in the UK

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C265143

You could turn the Acadiane into a really neat towd!

Regards,
Rob M.

How COULD one dislike a toad with a flammable body, lack of power, and a built - in mosquito fogger?  And besides 'nobody else has one'.  Net.friend tells me they've pretty much disappeared from the ex Iron Curtain countries as well.

We are currently in Quartzsite (again, Two Thursdays in a row!). On the way down 95, to our spot at MM-99, we saw a group of GMCs at Rice Ranch, presumably the Pacific Cruisers. A small group of people, on foot, waved and smiled as we drove by the big tent area. Again, presumably some of the Pacific Cruisers. We don't mean to be unsociable, but we are only going to be here for one night, on our way back from a trip to the coast. Next stop, the GMCSJ Rally at the Pinal County Fairgrounds.
