Well got to fire up the new Ryobi 2kw generator for the first time. Few drops of fuel (it was all I had), and a little oil. Takes .42 quarts or 10w-30 ( I had syn 10-40). Since mine was a refurb it didn't come with any since I only got the unit with no box. After adding oil, two pulls it fired up right away. Purrs like a kitten. I was amazed how quiet it was. Looks like a smart purchase for $399 I tested it under a 25 amp DC load and it didn't strain at all. I'll report back if anyone is interested as I get to really try it out. But so far so good. Maybe a good alternative to the Honda for over a grand! I will be taking out my Onan even though it only has 78 hrs and is from 2001. But I really hate its smell and sound. I think I'll use it at my house as a backup. I'm excited to have a nice portable generator for $399
I ordered a TurboKool today. I really hope it works. Got it for only $425 shipped. Can't wait to check it out! My GMC is really turning out cool lately. I'll be interested in telling people about TurboKool for anyone in the south west. Less then 5 amps DC on High Pwr, near 2 amps on low, perfect for my solar array. From wanting to blow my GMC up, to starting to really enjoy it makes me a ton more happy with it!
I took peoples suggestions and did research on a bed for the front seats. I bought a foldable bed from Pro Bass Shop after researching them all. I had to remove the Legs on both sides of the bed and kept the middle legs intact. Then I cut the legs I removed that went down to the ground and fit them to go side to side on the head and foot of the bed. Then screwed them in both sides where the legs used to be attached. Now instead of the bed folding up into a little bundle it folds in half like a clam shell. When needed I simply lay it across the front seats. The middle legs didn't need anything they touch the ground perfect. I'm 5'9" 190 and was comfy in it. I'm sure our daughter will enjoy it as well so she doesn't get kicked all night by her little brother sleeping on the foldable couch I maybe a forum pest but peoples suggestions help me a lot to accomplish things on the GMC its, "Gettin There"

Michael,
I haven't been following this thread as here in Aus the power id 230 VAC - 50 HZ.
IIRC Ryobi is a Japanese brand, however, Japanese manufacturers just like their US (and other country) counterparts have setup
factories in China.
Was there any info as to the country of manufacture of your generator?
I'm trying to see if JimK is right when he says the Chinese should stick to stir fry! ;-)
Regards,
Rob M.

Mr.RadioActive wrote on Fri, 20 January 2012 21:50 | Well the Chinese make good things like egg rolls (yum) and Ipads, but the Ryobi was a chinese product When I bought it there was a bit of oil in the bottom of the unit inside and out. But I figured since it was a reconditioned item, who knows people messing with it at the store etc no biggie. Then I cleaned it all up, added oil/gas ran super. But the oil never stopped leaking. It was reconditioned in the USA, so I'm not sure its a chinese issue.

Almost every major manufacturer builds products in China with first rate quality. Like I've said many times, it is all about specifications and meeting them.

Can you tell us more about the TurboKool
Is this a 'swamp cooler' or a RV HVAC unit?
What is the model number you chose? Did you find others
which are about the same specs?
Thanks!

I second that. The Chinese can build to tight specs and they can build to
loose ones. It boils down to how much Americans want to pay for products.
Pay cheap, get cheap.
The Honda and Yamaha units are a better products but cost $300 more. The
Ryobi and Generac are less costly and less quality. With the Honda and
Yamaha units you also get quieter running and more reliability. With Ryobi
and Generac you get "value" for the dollar. The V in value stands for
"varies".

There are other Chinese Brands that are worth considering. We purchased a Kipor 3.5kw unit in 2006. We were at a rally (non-GMC), and someone had them for about $1100. It is very similar to the Honda 3.5,in both appearance and operation. Other than oil, fuel and starting battery, this unit is trouble free. I have deployed it for remote Ham radio operations, and power back-up at home.
I would purchase it again.

I wish I cashed in on the Kipor deal when the forum had posted the coupon code in dec 2011. The Ryobi was only $399 If it had been cheaper then that I would of taken it 100% apart and looked for the leak. But $399 and couldn't find the leak fairly easily it had to go back before I couldn't exchange it. Granted it was already a refurbished unit. Maybe a new one wouldn't of been a issue. But for $599 I would prob wait till a Honda deal comes around.
My TurboKool should be here on monday or tue next week. I pulled the storage pod off on friday. Next I'll rip off the AC, and vent. I'm going to heat seal paint the roof before installing the TurboKool. As humidity goes up swamp coolers get less effective. But even in high humidity when you have nothing else its better then nothing at all. I'm planning on using my TurboKool mainly when driving. I'm going to seal off the area past the kitchen when driving and use a rear view camera on the dash. Then the Turbokool will only have to cool the main cabin area. Draws about 4.5 DC amps which is nothing. I already have 4 MonoCrystal 100 watt panels so it will run easy with no generator.
