You don't really hear a lot about Caspro anymore. How active are they in the GMC parts business? They seemed to have some suspension components, shocks, and transmission kits.

Thanks gene & George,

Am I correct in assuming that the Caspro transmission kit is a switch pitch
install?

Hugh,

The Caspro shift kit does not convert a standard transmission to a switch pitch.

Switch pitch means you have a torque convertor that has vanes that will change angles to provide extra torque when engaged.

They came in 1966, 1967, and 1968 Oldsmobile Toronados and were connected to a planetary gear final drive.

If you want more info click on the link below and you can download the manuals for both.

http://www.bdub.net/manuals/index.html

They are way down at the bottom.

You can also do a Google search for Switch Pitch TH-425 and lots of info will pop up.

I do not know what the Caspro shift kit does so I'll leave that response to someone else.

Regards,
Rob M.

Caspro used the transgo shift kit but omitted two steps. One was the
spring in the modulator and the other was the restrictor in the
governor feed. He did alot of research and his kit is probably the
best one for the GMC
The kit puts you in command. It will shift whenever you downshift no
matter at what speed you're at.
The problem is that people forget and the new owner didn't know about
the shift kit and on a downhill situation downshifting at 70 miles an
hour something will brake.
I've had quite a few calls from GMCers that brake down at the
Grapevine, Custa grade even Altamount.
I'm not a big advocate of the shift kits and whenever I find one, I
remove it and set it to normal.
I like the smooth shifting not the going over a hump shifting but to
each his own.

o.k., now I understand.

This morning I was reading the diary the P.O. gave to me. In October,
1988 a Caspro transmission shift kit, Caspro transmission cooler pan and
transmission oil cooler lines were installed.
The reason I picked up on this was that the 1978 Palm Beach shifts
differently than the other GMC"s that I have driven. The shifting is really
smooth, almost seamless. I will be careful not to downshift at high speeds.

Thanks again!

Uuuuhhhhh..... Rob,

66 & 67 only on the switch pitch. And I have a Manny-built one
with
an aluminum radiator. I had a SP solenoid failure just west of
Little
Rock, Arkansas. Called Manny and he told me to drive reasonably
and watch the engine temp. If it starts too warm up, stop and
let everything
cool down. We drove home at 60 MPH and never saw abnormal temps.
I remember how they were in the 60s, but the aluminum radiator is
one
great piece. It worked for me, I don't guarantee anyone else's
stuff.

Gary,

DOUH! You're right, NATURALLY! That's what I get for not double checking!

And you're running a Caddy 500 which runs hotter than the Olds 455 does it not?

I played it safe with the last sentence! ;-)

Rob M.

Rob,

I'd heard the stories about Cadillacs and heat, so, when I built
it, I made sure
that the water jacket in the block was clean. Also bought the
good Flowkooler
water pump and the aluminum radiator. Now, it just runs up to
the thermostat
and stays there. It does work for me.
