A nice winter 350 mile one way ride to Starkville, MS last weekend for a dog show. And to drop off the propane tank assembly from the SOB I'm junking with the Upper Alabama GMCer; met him in the metropolis of Coker, AL (just West of Tuscaloosa) and transferred the tank. Took about 6 hours and change, including potty breaks for the BWD along the way. GMC ran like a top. I had taken the mechanical lock off the heater temp valve, so I had some hot air out of the vents. More would of been nicer, but during daylight there was sufficient warm for shirtsleeves. Temp guage varied from quarter scale - where it resides in the summer - to just off the lower peg. I don't know whether the guage is wonky, or the engine just doesn't throw off a lot of heat and the heater removed most of that. Next trip I make in the cold, I'll blcok off some or the radiator and see if that helps.
Aside from being a land grant Unicersity towbn, Starkville has industry of note. MFJ Enterprises - the hams know them - and their subsidiaries Hy-Gain antennas and Ameritron amplifiers are there. Also Paccar, who builds Peterbilt big rigs there. And some others, but those stand out.
Can't speak to the RV campgrounds, I stayed in friends' driveway. It was cold enough (20s) to freeze the water hose so I disconnected and drained it each night, and used water from ther coach tank for midnight comfort stops. Didn't seem to be cold enough to freeze the blackwater tank. I've no idea what the freezing point of the average blackwater ewven is... I'd be interested in reading someone else's research on the matter - from a distance. 23 degrees didn't bother it though. I dumped at the Alabam Welcome Station just East of Columbus MS. And opened the water tank drain and let it run out on the interstate for the next fifty miles or so.
We got Best of Opposite Sex (to best of breed) both shows. No points, but a nice ribbon.
Nest up, four days in SE Atlanta for shows... 50 miles from home. I'll take the toad and commute at least a couple of nights. Gotta park RVs two nights for the show, I'll hang for those.

Nice report, Johnny. It's always good to hear about a successful, uneventful trip. The temp issue might be the thermostat???

I wouldn't take any chances blocking off the radiator to make the cabin warmer unless you know actual engine temperatures. That OEM send and gauge cannot be used for that purpose. My OEM gauge was showing normal temp ranges but when I put a real mechancial gauge in it turned out the engine was getting as hot as 240.

P'raps the overtemp sensor on the burner, I dunno. Dissassembly and inspection is in order. It hasn't set the CO detectr off, so if it looks good I'll fix and continue. If not, out the door it goes. Fortunately, the couch or dinette over it isn't present, it's fairly easy to get to.

Well, I see your concern, but a cooling system with the moxie to haul the temp down in Florida when it's 100 out and i'm doing 65 up the freeway - which this one does - is going to have beaucoup extra capacity when it's in the 20s - 30s out. And the temp guage trends tend to support this. On a hot engine, I normally would look for a bit of sag in the oil ressurem, a bit of loss of performance and a bit more noise. Currently, the vots is, it is runnign almost cold.
