This weekend was the GMC 49ers January rally at Red Bluff.
We tried to leave early Friday morning but ended up driving down the
driveway around noon.
It started out fine, got down the hill and into the county road. As I
tried to accelerate I couldn’t get past 30 mph so the tranny wasn’t
shifting. One quick glance at the gauges and the tranny pressure was
160, vacuum 11”.
I knew right away that there was no vacuum to the modulator. I stopped
on the side of the street in front of some houses. Pulled the hatch
but couldn’t see any loose or disconnected vacuum hoses.
So I got out and looked underneath and there it was the hose to the
modulator dangling. The problem was that I couldn’t reach it so I got
back in the coach and drove back home.
It only took a few minutes to connect the hose with a zip tie.
Started the engine again and this time the tranny pressure was 60psi
and vacuum 22” just like it was when we first drove down the hill.
Its 216 miles and there was a little traffic but we got to the
campground just before 5pm.
My wife went in to check in as I waited. When she came out with an
attendant for me to follow him to the campsite on his golf cart, she
told that I was leaking and leaving a trail.
Once I got into the campsite, we checked what was leaking and it was
diesel. Looking underneath the coach verified that it was coming from
the driver side of the engine. I put a pad under the engine to soak up
the fluid and left it alone.
It was happy hour and getting dark so we just had time to setup and
join the group.
We had a great meal that evening and socialized with our friends.
Saturday morning after breakfast and the business meeting and the tech
session (maybe it was afternoon by now) I removed the hatch, started
the engine and found where it was leaking.
It was the return fuel line from the injection pump. I had to remove
the2” air intake pipe and remove the air fuel control tuve. When I
unscrewed the nut, half the tube fell down. That was not what I was
expecting. Once I wrenched out the other side (banjo bolt) , then
proceeded to wrench out the other banjo bolt for the fuel return line
and that cam loose at the bracket on the case.
This return line tees off to the injectors return line by means of
compression fittings. I also had to unbolt the line bracket to the
side of the block.
Once I had the parts lying on the picnic table, it was obvious that
these lines would have to be ordered from Cummins so the thing to do
was to band aid it. By the way the lines are metric close 3/16”.
Joe & Kathy and Gary & Rebecca thanks for hosting the rally, you all
did a great job and we had a great time.
I got a ride to Napa and got a foot of fuel hose and four clamps. I
had the sales gay at Napa cut the bracket from the line. With the
parts, I cut a section of hose and fed both ends with the air fuel
control lines and clamped on both ends. I did the same with the fuel
return lines.
I put everything back but didn’t test it because the 49er game had
already started.
At halftime I did start the engine and there were no leaks and no
leaks on the way home this morning but I will order the parts from
Cummins.
Did I mention that the Eco Liner stooped by?
The second game was a little boring, good thing we had a great catered dinner.
Other than the return fuel line braking, I had no other problems and
we didn’t even notice the leak while driving but I bet we would if it
was gas leaking. For sure we would have a fire.

Great report. Glad the rally was a great success. Seeing the Blastolene in
person had to be a highlight as well as seeing the Niners win (though my
nephew in Louisiana nearly had a heart attack).

Randy spoke to me and told me that he saw the coaches so he stopped in
to say high. They were on the way to Arizona.
He is using Manny's trans, our engine and final drive and Bill Hubler
front end and our American eagle wheels on the front.
You should see his shop, he does most of the work himself and farms
out those he knows he can not do well.
