I've grown to really like Hitachi tools, particularly the 18 volt Lithium cordless drill.

Well i've misplaced it (this is embarrassing) i have looked everywhere and it has been missing since thanksgiving.

The list of projects and honey-dos that are dependant on that tool is growing.

Finally, i broke down and bought a replacement- but knowing the old one will turn up as soon as the check clears, i went cheap

Lowes had the Hitachi 12 volt Lithium on sale for $69 (down form $129)

This thing is so impressive I thought I would share with the group.

It's tiny, and light, and it will buryt the head of a 3.5" drill screw with the same ease as its 18 volt cousin.

I think it will be particularly pleasant to use on overhead jobs.

Several vendors have them on sale right now.

Treat yourself.

Dave,

Everyone has their favorites. I originally bought a Hitachi drill/driver
at Costco about six years ago and was a little disappointed in torque and
battery life, I understand since then they have improved 100%. I went out
and bought the Rigid kit shortly after that, 24 volt and very heavy duty.
Drill/Driver/Hammer drill, reciprocating saw (saws all) 6" trim saw and a
flashlight - from Home Depot. ALL 24 volt and all guaranteed for life from
head to toe including the batteries. I have replaced the 24 volt batteries
three times in the past five years. At $95 each that's $285 - for a kit I
paid $349 for - next replacement will make the kit free. Nothing like a
bumper to bumper warranty! I do use mine commercially nearly everyday, so
the free registering of the warranty has been fantastic. I also added
three 12 volt mini drivers and two 24 volt impact drivers.

The Hitachi should serve you well.

JWID.

The 18v seem to be the way to go. The prices are going down, they have cool accessories. I use a Ryobi 18v and love it. Lacks power for just some rare jobs like when I was drilling through reinforced 2 layer steel, but I love 18v drills. Good score for $69!

my point was just that this drill does more than I expected in a lightweight package.

I miss the 18v and if it doesn't turn up I'll have to replace it.

The little drill is more like a luxury tool that i would not have treated myself to if i hadn't needed it.

Dave,

I agree, I use the 12 volt tools 90% of the time - mainly because they are
light and easy to carry. The 24 volt is over kill most of the time. As a
matter of fact, rigid has now gone back to the 18 volt product line because
people complained about the weight of the 24 volt tools. There is an
electrician I see on many of the jobs and he carries a 30 volt and 12 volt
Makita - he says the 30 volt is there - just in case...

Your 18 volt will show up - probably exactly where you left it!

If you are a "men's mall rat" (you often go to the junkyard) there is another good thing specifically about 12v cordless tools. The batteries make good power sources to check out 12 volt car/truck parts... before you pay for them.

It is good to see Lithium based products getting that low in price.

Oh sorry misread your post on the 12v/18v. We had just returned from our trip from Mexico when I read it. 18v is great, but 12v drills have gotten a lot better these days. We use several 12v Hitachi and Ryobi 12v drills at work and they get used a lot!
Enjoy Smile
