Anybody try one of these before i know that our vacuum advance's are special but seems like you could really fine tune with one of these. Im just asking http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-WEHRS-MACHINE-EXTERNAL-TIMING-ADJUSTMENT-KNOB-GM-HEI-DISTRIBUTORS-/220918554779?pt=Race_Car_Parts&vxp=mtr&hash=ite m336fc5a09b

I'm not so sure our vacuum advance unit is special other than a certain calibration setting that I'm sure can be found on other GM distributors as well. This unit wouldn't offer dynamic advance changes which I would hate to lose. There are adjustable vacuum units that may be more interesting.

Hi Bob:

You really do want the Vacuum advance in your unit. Without a computer, it is the item that adjusts your timing based on engine load. The item you are looking at on e-Bay, gets rid of the vacuum advance and locks the timing to just the centrifical advance. (If they even have that working) The only thing it does is allow you to adjust the base timing without loosening the distributor bolt.

Remember that Race cars do not need load sensing devices. They either do "Go like Mad Man" or "Stop" Being at Wide Open Throttle (and hopefully zero Vacuum )They are always under the maximum load possible and Vaccum advance does nothing for them.

Note: If there is Vacuum in a Race car, that means there is some type of restriction in the intake system..Bad thing for racers.

We must be very careful when looking at Race stuff. They do things for very different reasons we do..

I like Emery's better. Even if it does take a wrench.
You know where you are.
I can't find the picture.

Hi John--these threads run together so I'm not the one who is interested in this at all!!

Ok im SOLD Emery's method is the best ive seen. Im going to make me a pointer. I was just curious Im all for the vacuum advance. When you step on it it goes. I was just wondering if you could use this with the vac advance and maybe the pointer too. Just would eliminate using a wrench.

I used this pointer a lot prior to getting my computer controlled distributor.

I set the bolt holding the distributor snug but just loose enough so that I could reach down and twist the distributor by hand.
I never had a problem with it turning by itself.
