Have we solved all the belt problems?
http://goo.gl/yalX3

got the right belt if they look like this
http://goo.gl/7TvSU

got the right tension, test like this
http://goo.gl/etZaA

easy to adjust , using these
http://goo.gl/etZaA

So all the belt problems gone?
no more slipping belts?
no more broken belts?
just tired?

Great compilation of information.

Now, if the belt manufacturers don't change their specs on the belt widths..........

gene,

Good start. ...if in the last 38 years if no POs have changed out the pullies, etc. I found from the approved list this fall that when I needed to change out my three thrown belts that the list was good for 2 out of three on ANNIE. NAPA was able to come up with the last with a little trial and error.
All GMCs are not the same.

I would like to possibly change out all of the pulleys with once for 1/2" belt. I don't know what parts might be needed but if anyone has done this or might be able to shed some light on the parts or possible donor vehicles for the parts please let us all know.

Thanks. But I don't need tbd belt numbers. What I am interesting is
changing all the pulleys so that I could use 1/2" belts.

Emery,

I have a sneaky suspicion the only way that would be possible is if someone made up billet pulleys like these for 1/2" wide belts:

I am thinking this is right,
part of the belt problems, were, folks were not working the problems, and
after a while poor maintenance, brought on make-do answers to a non-problem.

Emery, have you looked at the later Olds 307 engines used into the 80's. They are more or less the same as the 403 which is similar to the 455. Other than those, I can't think of anything easy.

I haven't looked at anything yet. I am in the thinking stage. I just wanted to check to see if anyone had already done this which would save me a lot of time looking.

Sure wish I had a full-up 455 in my shop. After figuring out how to put
serpentine belts on the Cad500, I'm of the opinion that it wouldn't be too
hard to figure out a similar arrangement for the 455.

As many of you know, the 455 I removed did have a serpentine belt, designed
& fabricated by Bobby Moore & JR Slaten. The problem with it is that it
runs the water pump backward. While adequate in my experience, that was
not a optimal situation. Leigh Harrison has sold a serpentine system for
years, with that same flaw. A few years back, he designed and built
reverse flow water pumps, some of which I tested for him. Because of the
large investment he made in those, their price was HIGH. He told me a few
days ago that he now has a production version (NOT his own production)
reverse flow pump; he didn't divulge the other application(s).

For my Cad500, I avoided the reverse flow problem with two separate
serpentine belts. I think something similar could be done on the 455. The
secret to that is the double serpentine crankshaft pulley used on mid-90's
Ford products. One shortcoming on my system is that I didn't install
automatic tensioners -- nor figure out where I could. That has not been a
problem -- but I'd feel better if I had them.

Someone must have an accessorized 455 they can spend a few hours studying...

Dolph,

The whole project may be easier if it includes, as my Cad500 one did,
replacing the A6 a/c compressor with a Sanden/clone and the alternator with
a more modern one, such as the CS-130D, which is higher output with smaller
size (mine from a mid/late-90's S-10). Those would not only come with
serpentine pulleys but would be smaller and perhaps be easier to remount.

All the kidding aside, the alternator swap is probably a beef up the lead wire electrical change.

Is that the 130 amp unit?

Other than mounting schema, the A/C compressor is a hosing problem.

No, the CS130D is a 100A alternator. No wiring change required other than
connectors. Even if a change was required, it would be trivieal.
