Subject: [GMCnet] rear door options just what we did
Well, decided to enter the present and learn how to use the photo site so
we could post pictures of our solution to the rear door/ ramp/tailgate
problem when converting a GMC into a car hauler.
In our case we are making a toy trailer to haul two vintage race cars and
have living quarters up front. As poor working stiffs, progress is slow, but
eventually it will be finished! Anyway, at the following link, you can see
what we have been up to.

They do good work. I first heard of this project quite some time ago. Notice the NEW aluminum skin? Evidently getting the old skin off the ribs without damaging the ribs was VERY difficult. After hearing of the work required to take the old aluminum skin off and new skin on, I asked if it would have been easier to use a few ribs as a pattern and build the whole thing from scratch.
That got Bert to think for a few minutes.
Seems when following the above link a few pictures are missed. There are a few more found here:

The truck cab LOOKS a bit like the one used on the Decoliner. It might make a good cab for a flat bed car hauler based on GMC frame and running gear. As they have (had?) the remains of the Midnight Express, the car hauler might have enough weight capacity for a "normal" GMC! For those who do not know the Midnight Express, here is a picture before it burned to the frame:

Like the looks of that project. I think the single, instead of split,
hatch/ramp makes better sense, Jay. But, I'd think that would call for
some type of lifting mechanism instead of human effort.
I also like the old White COE. It was the most popular model with real
"forward control" back in the day. Ford, Chevy, GMC tended to do a taller
unit based on a typical truck chassis with engine in the standard location
unlike White that aimed this cab forward design at the medium haul market.
The engine is further back in the chassis so the driver could sit lower to
the street for easier entry/exit.

Welcome to the 21st century.
Good work. I'm as interested in that White as the GMC-based trailer.
They'll make a dynamite duo.

To me the type of ramp would depend on what you planned on hauling. It has been quite a few years from when I last talked with Bert about this project... but if I remember correctly, the Curtis trailer is to carry TWO Formula Vee race cars. <http://www.formulavee.us/what_is_fv.htm> These are very low to the ground, so there can not be any large angles at the top or bottom of the ramp. If you look at the pictures, you can see some of the lift that is to lift the first car up so the second car can be slipped under the first. <http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=42004>

No I think the split rear idea is the way I still will go, I like the project to remain the way GM would have had it, and the way you illustrated it, But this will is a great project Im humbled to think I can put this type of work in mine.
