I'm new to the GMC Motorhome and this forum and I'm looking for a little advice. I purchased a '76 Eleganza a few months ago anticipating a relocation to where the motorhome is. That relocation didn't happen. My Eleganza is in Washington state and I'm in TX. The Eleganza had been sitting for years before I purchased it. While stored, it was kept heated and winterized but not driven routinely. I inspected what I knew to look for at purchase (no apparent frame rust, does need shoes/pads/tires, airbags inflate and stay up, gen runs) and was able to get it running (carb cleaned, gas replaced/flushed) and drove it about 100mi before storing again pending my relocation (which didn't happen). Seemed to run strong.
My questions:
What additional maintenance should I consider before embarking on a 2K mi road trip to bring her back to TX?
If I have major mechanical issues along the way, anyone have advice on towing? Hopefully I'm just being overly prepared and not jinxing myself.
I have some sentiment for keeping the GMC but this might be too much for my wallet to withstand if I have issues along the way. If I decide not to bring her back this trip (I'll be up that way in a week), any advice for storage options or selling options for the mid-Washington area? Thanks.

Ernie, what route are you planning for your return to TX? I am about 6
miles from Interstate 5 near Salem, Or. If you get stranded, let me know.
We GMCers are a helpful bunch, we will come up with something to get you on

Check the age of the tires. DOT Code is molded into the sidewall of each tire. I would not drive from Washington State to Texas on old tires that have been sitting. Engine battery may also be suspect. Flush the brake fluid and replace it. New pads up front, they work hard. Check the anti-freeze. Carry extra oil and anti-freeze.
Print out the Black List. These are people that will help you if you have a problem. I brought a coach from TX to Northern Virgina, stopping at GMC'ers along the way. Did some minor work at every single stop.
Have good towing coverage and a very good credit card.
Relax and enjoy the ride. GMC people are the most fun. Welcome to the "cult".

Greg, although I'm a "wannabe" I follow the forum A LOT. I don't remember any discussion about appropriate 17" wheels for a GMC. I'm pretty sure one could find 17" 70 series tires in the appropriate size and load range D or E. If I "assume" the 17" wheels off a later GMC 2500 or 3500 would fit on the front of a GMC and sort of take the place of spacers, that MIGHT be doable. Due to the needed offset for the rear, I am pretty sure NON DUALLY wheels are NOT !!!!suitable for the rear.
The aluminum rims from JIMK-- EAGLES in 16" and nice new 16" tires seems like the BEST solution. (I recently found snow tires from week 38, 2011 nice and new)

Pass conditions in the pacific northwest change all the time.
I have driven across them, and it looked like summer one week. the next week it is ice road.
one big issue with the GMC other then traction, is windshield wipers and keeping the windshield clean. use lots of rainx. and if you can keep that windshield warm so things do not freeze to it. you will be doing fine.
I would say your success crossing mountain passes in the winter with an unknown GMC could depend on that days weather.
But I guarantee you from my being in the GMC community for the last year. they do not like to leave you on the side of the road.
Help is out there.

I sit here thinking that Greg DID make a new message
with a new subject (Wheel size). Does the goofy forum
pick up the former subject of (Relocating a 76 Eleganza)
instead of what I consider the new subject of "Wheel size?"
Seems to me to be a software problem with the forum!

Mac,
The problem is that the Forum software doesn't utilize the text in the
"Subject" field for threading -- it uses a concealed message header. SO,
entering a new subject in an existing message string doesn't work; one must
create an entirely new message with the new subject.
GMail, on the other hand, threads on the subject, so threads are generally
much more coherent. Outlook, etc., don't bother to thread at all. Neither
is wrong; they're just different.

A big part of this depends on how adventuresome you are. If you breakdown and don't go into panic mode, you will find that parts, service and help is readily avilable just in case something happens. If it scares the he.. out of you you may overload your coach with every part recommended here. I think fluids and tires are a good pace to start. If you have the time, you may want to take 2 or 3 short trips before you take the big one.

Rob & Mac, I also get bugged when someone hijacks a thread. Hijacking, specifically: some one tries to start a new thread by opening an email and erasing all the text and changing the subject line. Actually there is a message number embedded in there that sticks the new post in the old thread. This message number can be followed by the forum and some email, but most emailers focus on the subject line.
Then, sometimes, someone will just change the subject in the middle of the conversation. That is just a bit impolite.
In this case, neither of those is what happened, I think. Greg picked up on a sliver of the conversation and followed up on it and changed the subject line. That is just plain old thread drift.
Forums bottom post; email often top posts. This further confuses threads. Some email software fails to carry the message number, resulting in multiple threads on the same subject.
No big hoohoo.
Soooo. Has anyone found 17" wheels and tires that work for us?
