Soon will be installing a set of Thorleys for the first time and using
Remflex gaskets.
Should I use High Temp Sealant on the gaskets??
Plan to use the standard torque of 25 ft lbs on the bolts with 75% on
the center bolt.
Can/Should I use the bolt locks with the Headers??
TIA

Richard,
I put my Thorley's on with the original thin gaskets. After a couple of years the drivers side went bad. I replaced that one side with a Jim K Remflex one earlier this year. I didn't put any sealer on, or any locks on. I've only got 500 miles or so on it since then, but so far, working great. I ran it about 1/2 hour and re-tightened once, very tight, with a short box end for the 4 bolts, and just snug on the center bolt. You can get a torque wrench in there, but it requires a lot of contortions, possibly a universal (which will destroy the accuracy of the readings) and is hard to read, so I didn't bother. The Remflex gasket seems pretty forgiving of mis-torquing. Their instructions say a low figure (maybe 15-20 ft. lbs.) vs. 35 or 40 for the Thorley instructions, but most people on this forum said to tighten the heck out of them, and that seems to be working for me.

Richard,
I do not know where you obtained the info. to torque the center to the
higher amount, but it should be the other way.
The 4 in line bolt pattern is the most critical. Leave the top center only snug.
The key is to re torque the other 4 after you drive it for 500-700
miles as they need to seat.Running the engine only is different than
driving it with load.
I do not dream up these procedure's, but acquire them from other shops
and from our customers, as they give us feedback and we also practice
these at our shop.

Richard,
When you install the headers -- if your install is like the one I completed -- I used the Thorley bolts on all locations except the front on the drivers side. A bracket mounts there as well and requires a longer bolt.
And, I was albe to get a torque wrench on only about half of the bolts due to the configuratio of the header tubes.
Good luck,
Dennis

Tony,
Did you torque it after 500 miles?

Jim
I was trying to say to torque the center bolt at 75 percent of the
other 4 with would be about 19 ft lbs.
I the past I have re torqued the bolts on the exhaust manifolds
several times and they have never leaked - it works.
Some have said that it is very difficult to position the torque
wrench, so some creative torquing is in order.
Sorry about the confusion.
