If you plan on traveling Michigan's upper peninsula, be ready. If you have a GMC you will get nailed for the same toll as a Greyhound bus. The motorhome toll is now 5$ per "axle". Their definition is tires seen in side view only. There is no consideration of vehicle weight at all. Twice the MBA has claimed it was a weight based toll. I wish I had to energy to take them to court on that falsehood.

A few years ago they charged me a premium because my pickup was a 3/4 T and they considered it a commercial vehicle. As far as my GMC, I don't think I was ever charged the same price twice on that bridge.

Should be only $5 as there is no axle in the back, just a swing arm and spindle x 4. (if you want to be a wise guy to them)

A 2 axle car will now be $4.00. If you are in the GMC and towing that same car it will $25.00 because you have 5 axles. Disconnect the car and drive over separately and it will be $15.00 for the coach and $4.00 for the car for a total of $19.00. Go figure. I guess it is just your government at it's best again.
But Michigan is a great place to visit so come on up. I would however suggest that you wait until at least June. Early August is the best for lack of biting bugs and the lakes are the warmest for swimming. There is an excellent national forest campground on Lake Michigan about 20 miles west of the Mackinac bridge in the UP. Several miles of sand beach in that area. Some of the sites can be reserved online at reserveamerica.com.

Here in Illinois (especially here in Crook County), the Tollway Authority is increasing tolls by 85% tomorrow! These tollroads were supposed to become freeways once the original bonds were paid off (many, many years ago), but somehow that's changed.

Gotta love governments when they've run out of money!

Alabama is the only place they actually did that which I know of.  When the Bankhed Tunnel going under Mobile Bay was paid off, the legislooters wanted to keep charging, but the Gooberner said no, and they pulled up the toll booths and it's now free.  Or was, anyway, I expect it still is.

Kentucky stopped collecting tolls on all of their toll roads in late 2006. They were considering some new tolls to build some bridges across the Ohio river and to finance the construction of a new Interstate. I do not know where that stands. I think everything is still free down there.

Rick,

Maybe it cost less if you had someone sitting in the driver's seat in the towd. You could claim that it was pushing the GMC! ;-)

Honesty you guys...how many times in your life do you cross that bridge? To me it was worth the $25 just to see the UP. Just pay the toll and get on with your life. We've all spent more money on lesser things. JMHO (ducking)

Hey Guys ;

May I Suggest A Simple Solution For This &&& Problem ~

What about one of our fine GMCers Design The Following ;

~~> 'A Tag Axle Air-Lift System' <~~
* {similar to the lift axle on the Tri-Axle Dump Truck}

Right before we stop at the 'Toll Booth'
we engage the front {center] Lift toggle switch and tha
air pressure lifts that set of wheels up off of the pavement ~
Thus
We Now Have A 2 Axle CUSTOM Oldsmobile Tornada
With
Only A $4.00 Toll Charge ~

~ ANOTHER PROBLEM SOLVED by a bonified GMCer ~

JA,

If you have a Four Bag (Harrison) or Quadra Bag (Kanomata) rear suspension system with a supply manifold you can probably do this
already.

I haven't tried it but I reckon you could:

1) Pull over just before you reach the toll booths.
2) Shut the manifold pressure supply valves.
3) Shut the front air bag isolation valves.
4) Vent all the pressure out of the rear air bags through the Schrader valve.
5) Connect a vacuum pump to the rear air bags through the Schrader valve.
6) Raise the rear wheels by evacuating the air out of the rear air bags.
7) Shut the rear air bag isolation valve.
8) Open the manifold pressure supply valve.
9) Open the front air bag isolation valve.
10) Pressurize the front air bags to bring the GMC to the correct ride height.

I'm guessing but I bet the rear wheels will be off the ground!

Keep in mind that you will be running with SERIOUSLY overloaded tires and wheels!

Regards,
Rob M.

The easiest way is to avoid all states with excessive tolls.

They do not want my tourist money so why should I visit them.

For people who live or lived in Michigan it was a very frequent occurance and not only was it aggravating but a big part of a weekend camping budget.

If I recall, they have a visual counter that detects the number of axles , not by weight sensors, so they really don't care or know if the tires are touching the road.

Can't we just claim it's another way of carrying spare tires if they're off the ground?

Rather than the vacuum pump, you could replace one set of shocks with air shocks. Pressurizing them would extend them and lift the wheels, as our shocks work 'backwards'.

Other thoughts:
-- I suspect large trucks with the extra "tag" axles only have to pay for the "extra axles" if they are loaded enough to need them.
-- You would be overloading the "in use" axle and tires by quite a bit. But you should not need to drive this way for very long.
-- lifting the rear-most wheels should reduce the turning radius. Lifting the front should be more stable.

Any other thoughts?

Mike,

Agreed, but I doubt you'll find a set of air shocks that will work. Plus a hand type Mighty Vac pump would a lot cheaper!

Come to think of it all you would have to do is vent the Schrader valve and put a jack under the rear bogie and jack it up!

Fun to toy with the idea just to mess with the "government" but as someone mentioned earlier "just pay the toll!" ;-)

Rob

As a radio talk show host states the govt looks at the auto as a Cash Cow, so us motorhomers must be thought of as drivers of a Cash Elephant. Gas, Tolls, Camp Ground Fees, getting out of hand.

Thanx For Your Input On The 'Lift Idea' ~

Hey, We Always Have To Stop Before The Tunnels To Turn Off The LP Cylinders ~
So What Would Be The Problem Of Simply Fliping The Lift Axle Toggle Switch
Before You Enter The Toll Booth To Lift The Front {Center} Tag Axle
And After You Leave The Toll Booth Just Flip The Toggle Switch Back Down ~
Repeat The Process When You Exit The Toll Bridge/Road ~

1 Year's Toll Savings Alone Would Pay For The 'HOLLAND' Lift Axle System ~

Just lift (or remove) the tire on the side with the camera, Duhh!!!

In Maine the Turnpike got paid off. They then continued to charge to widen it. The locals only wanted the south bound side widened so the visitors could leave faster. Laughing
