A friend of mines father passed away and for the past three days, I've
been helping him sort through the usual stuff. He left behind an RV and a
towed, neither of which has been moved in 6 years. Last registration date
on both is '06. Fortunately, both were in a sealed, block garage so the AZ
sun hasn't had a chance to take it's toll. We flushed out the bad gas on
the towed, put in some new, did a few checks and it fired right up. I
towed it back to my shop about 75 miles away and cleaned it up to sell it
on my friends used car lot. Because of it's light weight (1,600 lbs) and
reputation for reliability, it is perfect for a GMC dinghy so I figured
I'll give the GMC community first shot. I towed one for many years and it
was hard to tell it was back there.
Nuts and bolts. 1991 Geo, 68,000 miles. Stowmaster tow bar with cover,
safety cables, wiring cable included, 5 pin connector. Very clean with a
few senior citizen bumps and scrapes (see pics). Battery is now three days
old, tires are probably OK (no checking) but I'd replace them if I was
going to keep it. Everything works, runs like a big sewing machine.
Clear title. Please make responses off net, in three days this one goes to
a lot. $2,500.00

It really is. I'm 6'1" tall and the car is easier to get in and out of
than our new Equinox. I should have mentioned that those things get 40+
mpg easily and more than half the miles on this one are towed miles. Oh
well, hindsight.
Gonna miss you and Terry this winter. Sorry you're stuck in Dexter when
you guys should be making your annual trek.

Steve--that one is about a nice as it gets. Is that the 3 cyl? I think the later ones were 4 bangers. Very tempting!

Bob,
Has some senior owies on it, but it is well cared for. About 30,000 miles
on the clock are towed miles. The 5 speeds all had the 40+mpg 3 bangers.
All the autos had 4 cyl engines. Would you believe those are 12" tires?

The Geo is still for sale. I did not point out in my initial posting that
it is a one owner and more than half of the 68,000 miles on the clock are
towed miles. I'll leave it here for the next two days, then it goes to
the car lot:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5018
Dick Patterson has an interesting history with these cars. I rec'd the
following from him:

Hi Steve ---I have had HVY experience with those cars since GM sent them to
we GM dealers in 1987- by the truckload-
-they are tough little guys and only really need oil changes to keep on
keeping on (i run 5W-20 Mobil 1 and a decent filter with a 'Filtermag" and
thats it.
Soon after the car was announced in 1987 GM set up a Factory mpg FUEL
Economy challenge and I prepped a 2 door 5 speed car in which we set an MPG
record -- we got 156 mpg (on an imp. gallon) and pissed off all the other
35 entrants.
I have had my 91 Pontiac Firefly 5 speed since 1992 (same as a Geo with the
3cyl ) we towed it for 60.000 miles -wheels down and I have driven it for
about 50000 miles it still gets an average of 60 mpg on imperial gallon .
In the fall I bought a rusted out (salted roads) 91 GEO Metro 5 speed 40000
miles 3cyl "Turbo- Charged -Intercooled multi port injected "---and am in
the process come spring of installing it in the Firefly-for a fun car. (why
Jan asks? theres nothing wrong with the motor you have now?) girls dont get
it.
Who ever snaps that blue car up -will love it. call me if they need
reference /assurance on these little buggers.
regards dick

This post has me thinking about towing with our coach.
What would be required to use this TOAD on my 73 coach?
Here are two photos of my hitch -- it is not stamped with a capacity, the 2 inch ball is rated at 3500 lb. There is a 4 pin connector.
What type of TOAD brake would work -- any estimate for the cost of one?

Dennis, the ball is OK but I suspect that's a home made hitch so it won't have a rating on it. It doesn't look too bad but I can't tell if it is also bolted to the bumper bar as it passes below it. If it's not, it may be a bit marginal although that little Suzuki is kight as a bird. I'd be a lot more comfortable with it if it was also bolted to the bumper bar to reduce the bending moment at that rear crossmember attachment.

Dennis,

I personally would not be reluctant to tow a car with your hitch -- it's
certainly made of substantial material! It wouldn't support a lot of
tongue weight, but owing a car doesn't require much.

As for a toad brake, this is all I've used for over 8 years now, on both
an S-10 and a Honda CRV, both of which weigh 800#-1000# more than that
Metro:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=3291

Because of the small orifices in the cruise control, it's too slow to be of
much value during a panic stop, but it definitely helps -- I can probably
stop better towing than not except for that. Commercial ones run $500++.

Of course, with the current scarcity of the Delco vacuum pumps, you'd have
to use something else, driving the cost above $30. :-(

Bob,

Thank you for the help -- it does not attach to the bumper. I do not believe it is home-made -- a similar model is sold by JimK...
The load rating (if it is stamped) may well be covered by the bumper or the sewer plumbing.

""This post has me thinking about towing with our coach.
What would be required to use this TOAD on my 73 coach?

Dennis, the ball is OK but I suspect that's a home made hitch so it won't have a rating on it. It doesn't look too bad but I can't tell if it is also bolted to the bumper bar as it passes below it. If it's not, it may be a bit marginal although that little Suzuki is kight as a bird. I'd be a lot more comfortable with it if it was also bolted to the bumper bar to reduce the bending moment at that rear crossmember attachment.

Ken,
Thanks for you input. Yes, I remember your TOAD brake from earlier posts. At the time I was mot considering towing (too many other priorities) and did not study it at all.
I found a similar hitch for sale by JimK -- rated for 300 lb tongue weight -- http://appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/1003

Thanks again,
Dennis

Because of the small orifices in the cruise control, it's too slow to be of
much value during a panic stop, but it definitely helps -- I can probably
stop better towing than not except for that. Commercial ones run $500++.

Of course, with the current scarcity of the Delco vacuum pumps, you'd have
to use something else, driving the cost above $30. Sad

Interesting! I agree with Ken that if towing and the tow mechanism is as level as possible, it can easily tow something like that Suzuki. However, I can't fathom that that hitch has an 8000 lb rating and be capable of 800 lb tongue load. Technically it should be able to handle 1200 lb vertical load and it possibly could if it was also secured to the bumber bar as well.

Any commercial hitch has to have several ratings clearly applied to the hitch--towing capacity, tongue weight capacity and equalizing capacity and it has to be certified to SAE 684 standards.
