Hi,
Would anyone know if Argon/CO2 mix or straight argon would be OK shielding gas for doing some simple tig welding for some titanium pieces 1" wide x 1/8" thick stock. I've got to make some fairing brackets for the kid's race bike.

Thanks

I don't have the answer but I have a question.
What type wire or rod do you use on titanium?

Gary, straight argon is the hot ticket here. Even better, you need an argon
enclosure similar to a bead blast cabinet that can be flooded with argon to
exclude oxygen and nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It goes without saying that
a matching welding rod (titanium) is the best thing.
If you weld it in the open atmosphere, you will need a pre flow/post flow
argon flood surrounding the weld affected zone, and that should include the
back side of the work piece. All I know in 3 sentences about welding
titanium.

I have some 1/16" titanium rod. Hopefully both the rod and my material are
similar alloys.

Thanks

Where I work, our welders are dealing with titanium all the time. Jim's comments are correct as titanium is a finicky metal to weld with decent results. Most of our welding is done in an argon purged chamber. Without one, you'll have a hard time getting a good looking weld.

Jim is correct about the shielding, there are some techniques that can
be used. Make a trailing cup with separate argon line running to it
and some way to shield the back of the weld. We would weld tubing in
the open air with the proper purging and trailing cups. Gary do you
know anyone that works a Arrowhead products in Los Alamitos, they do
it all day long, have 2 -10,000 gal liquid argon tanks. Find someone
that knows someone that works there.

It is not something that you just do as it has a mind of it own and
you have to learn how to deal with it. If when you weld it, it has
white stuff on it it is junk and if it has purple discolor on it, it
is junk, it must look just like it did when it was not heated.

Use stainless steel.
