I unexpectedly discovered that even though my coach had a valid smog certificate when I bought it the middle of last year, my registration renewal is calling for a new biennial certificate this year. I'm guessing this is because I had a registration renewal last December, so even though it hasn't been 2 years, it is the 2nd renewal. *Sigh*
Anyway, just wondering what I should expect from the "visual inspection". Will the test station need to get under the hatch, hook up equipment, remove the air cleaner, or ?? The 2010 certificate shows the coach passed very cleanly, and I've only put less than 1500 miles on it since then, but I just want to be prepared so I don't have any surprises.

It's been awhile since I lived in your area but I remember the tech looked at my gas cap,checked to see if the hot air pipe was attached to the air filter under the hatch made sure the carbon cannister was connected etc. He didn't notice I had removed the vacuum tree on the intake manifold. At that time they didn't put the drive wheels on the dyno. I would do a fresh oil change and set the idle to just under 900 RPM.

Pete,,,,,no smog test in the state of Misery (Missouri),,,,at least not in my county. One GMC owner in the CA failed then passed after he filled with new gas. Ethel won't help,,,,,,,GL (good luck) PL

I have about 2/3 tank of relatively fresh 91 octane in it. Lower octane tests better?
Living in California all my life you'd think I would know such things, but most of my vehicles have not required smog testing (Citroen 2CVs, diesels, hybrids, new cars). I was trying to hold out for a pre '76 GMC (exempt from smog here), but this '77 was too special to pass up.

I've been through a test in Sonoma County, CA recently. What I recall was that the tech spent time looking at the top of the engine. He must have removed the air cleaner since I don't think you can see the timing marks without doing so. He noted that I had replaced all the vacuum lines. Timing was measured at 11 degrees advanced, the top limit since the spec is 8 deg plus/minus 3 according to the CA test spec. I had previously set it to 11.
He did not have a fitting which fit the GMC gas cap, so couldn't test it. Also, having two tanks somehow excludes testing the carbon cannister and associated vapor lines, so both of these passed.
He then had me goose it a couple of times and looked for smoke coming out the exhaust. I don't really burn much oil, but using Synthetic probably means it wouldn't smoke even if it were bad.
Then, I got my certificate as passed.

Pete,
I am in San Diego. I just had mine smoged here. Before I went in for the test I downloaded the manuals and got pictures of the required smog equipment and vacuum lines. I had a couple crossed lines, which I repaired and replaced the pcv valve (that plugs into the passenger's side valve cover), breather element (that plugs into the drivers side valve cover) and all the grommets. Because mine had not been driven in a long time I did a simple tune up, new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I removed the hatch cover for the inspector so he could see if the required smog equipment was still there, like the pcv valve that plugs into the valve cover. He also does a pressure test on the fuel system. In my case the fuel line that supplies the generator was broken where it goes through the metal tray. I had just filled the fuel tanks for the first time and when I parked the coach on a slight uphill slant at the smog station it began to leak gas. He told me I needed to fix that befor
e he could continue so 3 ays later after fixing my line I brought it back and it passed with flying colors. Call me if you have any questions. 619-460-2145.

We help our customers to pass smog by making all the visuals are
correct, then we use our sniffer and if ok, we send it down to be
certified.
Sometimes you can over lean the engine to a point where the spark will
not light off the gas as there is not enough gas molecules to start
burning. I never believe that was possible, but a good friend from
Southern CA that ran a Gold Shield Smog shop, George Verlinden
convinced me to richen the idle to pass.
In CA, the 78 CA models have 2 carbon canisters, the US of federal
ones has the standard one canister only and most of the tome I'm
yelling at them on the pone to look on the passenger side.
