Costco has active noise canceling headsets for $40/pair. You can connect them to your radio, MP3 player, computer or to nothing at all. Just wearing them should lower the annoying low frequency noise and make for a more restful drive.

A good way to kill somebody or yourself. Driving is dangerous and requires as many senses as possible. Listening for horns, sirens, even other motors is a requirement for safe driving. In most states it is illegal to drive with headphones anyway. If you want a quieter ride, insulate your floor, not your head.

I think he was joking- My brothers first car he used to say, every few mths he would have to buy a louder stereo in order to keep from hearing the strange noises that kept getting louder and louder. I couldn't wear them and drive, since I like to hear my cell phones beeping as I text, surf the net, and drive.

umm I think the OP was making the statement with tongue in cheek. sort of as a bit of humor. or at least that is the way I read it.
That being said I also drive a 1976 Austin mini. these were made like a drum. every sound is transmitted and amplified INSIDE the car. engine noise and road noise. I have added sound deadening and it helps. however the best thing to cut through the noise inside the car is a set of ear bud headphones. They are plugged into my phone and as a bonus act as a hands free device. I have not tried to measure the sound level but I do know with them in I can hear the OUTSIDE noises much better. I also understand that having both in maybe illegal in most places.
There is also laws about the amount of ambient noise allowed in a work place or a public place. one could argue that these laws would also apply to you mode of transport.

Deaf or almost deaf people can not drive?
If that is truce, I'm in trouble as are a few others here.

I do not know but what ever it is it is above my hearing range. I have selective hearing when it comes to most female voices.

Deaf people certainly can drive and that wasn't what I was aiming for. However, it IS illegal to drive with headphones because you are supposed to use the senses you have when driving. That includes your ears if possible. Being deaf or hard of hearing doesn't preclude you from driving, BUT artificially dulling a sense through noise cancelling headphones is a) illegal, and b) a bad idea in practice.
You can't help it if you are deaf or hard of hearing... that doesn't mean that those of us who aren't should artificially make ourselves less aware of what is going on around us.

One of the good things about electronic noise canceling headsets is they only effect low frequencies. That means you can still hear the pedestrian scream as she rolls under your coach and the siren as the cop chases you down.

I guess poor hearing has some merit, at times I turn my hearing aids lower so the outside noise goes away and turn up the radio volume. On time while pulling into a gas station my wife was screaming at how close I was to the truck on her side but all I could hear was the radio I could see her reaction though.

Most states rewuire an outside driver's mirror for deaf people. Currently, though, everything made has such a mirror. Whan I was a young sprat, you could pick out the deaf drivers.
