Just ran accross a new item on JimK's website. Looks like he's carrying a new entry step that folds back out of the way when you start the engine (basically an alternative to the Ragusa step).

Looks pretty nice (though not inexpensive), and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these? I don't think I've ever seen them on any RV sites, so this may be something new that's been developed. I was considering getting a Ragusa step for a spring project on my coach, but this may be a very neat alternative!

George,

I assume you're talking about this step:

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/473

I did some web surfing and found some info on Project 2000 steps:

http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/shopuk/project_2000_steps.htm

If you scroll down the page you'll find the sentence below; it has a link that will take you to a pdf document with the specs on a
number of Project 2000 steps:

"Download the Project 2000 Steps Catalogue as a PDF in a new window for pictures & dimensioned drawings."

http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/pdf/Project_2000_%20Steps_2011.pdf

I suspect these steps are made in Italy because the first language in the catalog above is Italian and that they use the word
"Brevettato" with "Patented" in the brochure.

I also found this information for Omni Step on their website:

http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/shopuk/steps.htm

Here's a link to the catalog for them:

http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/pdf/OBro08_66-71.pdf

I suspect these steps are made in Germany because the catalog uses the term Art.Nr. and that's part or model number in German.

Ttttthhhhaaattss all folks!

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

I agree with you about the source for the Project 2000 steps. And for
Omnistor's. They look to me like the same products. The German in the
text is because it's a Belgian company. And for one line they state
"Imported for special order only" (SIC).

Look like pretty nice products, but the very thin slide-out model would
have to fit beneath the frame with about 2" loss of ground clearance.

I was wondering how they may fit on our coaches. There appears to be three styles, two folding and one that extends directly from a sleeve type pocket. Can't tell from the pic which type Jim uses (perhaps he can chime in!).

I do like the way they look and the automatic features, but ground clearance is always a factor.

Yes, these are made in Italy.
There is a slight problem in that there is a elctric motor that
protuees above ith main unit by 1".
That motor hits the fuel tank, so the unit ends up being anther inch lower.
We will be supplying "skids" in hopes that we will not have people
snag the units.

Sounds like they would fit OK on a 23 foot coach... no gas tank near the door to get in the way.

Is there a vacuum retracted/spring extended step option that doesn't use an electric motor?

Here's the one that's been working fine on the X-Birchaven for maybe
10 years. It's not perfect; there are a few minor changes I should
make, but it's trouble-free. Someone was going to do drawings for it
years ago but got distracted. There's actually enough info in the
photos to enable someone to build one, except for one problem: I
don't know for sure the source of the vacuum actuator. I THINK it's
an early Corvette headlight actuator, which is obviously not a
"readily available" item. If this one ever fails, I guess I'll find
one, or convert it to air actuation, which would be easy and have some
advantages.

Is there a vacuum retracted/spring extended step option that doesn't use an electric motor?

A few months ago someone posted pics of a permanently mounted step designed for pickups that looked pretty nice--molded fiberglass. It appeared to be small enough to never need retraction.

As always Gene, thank you.I have to say it looks a bit more prominent there but I still like the idea. On a 26ft it may be a little more vulnerable.
