Hi,
After tackling a shredded Alt belt in Manhattan I'm about to try and install the AC belt I picked up last night. I cut the previous one as it was twisted and was in a hurry.
I'm pretty green so does anyone have any tips, advice or reference diagrams that may help, I couldn't find anything on changing belts in the original manual.

Pretty much the same procedure. Loosen the bolts on the compressor, move it inward, replace the belt.
Use something to pry the AC compressor back outwards to take the slack out of the belt, and tighten the belt.
If you're up north and the weather is cold, you can run without the belt untill you need the AC once again. I hate working outside in the cold weather!

Sometimes that AC compressor can be a bugger to swing over. I usually forget to loosen one of the bolts or not loosen it enough. Also, on my coach the recommended belt is always tight and I have to work hard to get it over the pulley. I swear that the next time I will get one 1" longer but when the time comes I always forget. Thankfully it doesn't come up for replacement very often.

JP,
One caution I don't think anyone has mentioned: Don't do like I too
frequently do: I tighten the adjusting bolt, retest the tension, and then,
relieved, close things up and put my tools away. WITHOUT retightening the
pivot bolts, which are just as important!
While you're installing the A/C belt, go back and recheck all the bolts on
the alternator and PS pump -- chances are those belts may need retightening
now anyway. And don't do my other dumb trick -- try to adjust without
loosening the pivots.

Thanks all, working at it 3 bolts right? 2 at each end and one underneath. I loosened it but can't get the belt over, really tight. Hope I got the right one! Any tricks, have tried I've the AC sheath which is really hard to access, and have tried from underneath trying to get it over the crank ( or is the bottom one the water pump?) sheath.

I have a dayco? 15605DR Drive Right belt from pep boys, Larry Davick pulled the number for me off Gene's site whatever that is. Can't see how I can get it on, trying to pry it etc, presume I can only loosen the AC?! And it's as far as it will go.

I don't know if this is of any help, or not, but look at this drawing from the manual. It shows all the bolts and torque settings. The bolts in the back were not obvious to me, and I struggled just as you are with the beast.

The a/c belt is the hardest to fit..
It takes a 60+ inch belt and with the part number you cite, looks like
it is correct. one.
One trick you might try is>>>> fit the belt on lower pulley[crank ] and
a/c pulley as much as you can and WITH FINGERS OUT OF THE WAY, jog the
engine using the key switch.
Just a momentary jog.
May take a second or third try
Belt will either slip on or off.
BE CAREFUL

On re-reading your note - here is a better answer.
The only adjustment to the A/C Belt comes from the compressor and moving it is something I've done with a very wide pry-bar (but gently).

Same here! I've often wondered if I could cut a notch in the cowl just enough to slide a belt through, but whenever I look at it I come away with the thought that it's impossible.

My fan is so tight in the shroud that I can't get a belt past the fan. So, I have to set the fan drive loose from the water pump shaft (and set it carefully against the radiator). Then, I remove, replace and route all the belts and remount the fan drive. Then I get to set the belt tension.
It is also nice that I have never had to adjust the power steering pump belt since I put the dual belt on the alternator.

I just got this other idea!!
Take the fan blade out and cut about 1/2 inch off just one blade, then paint it so that blade is easy to find.
Actually, if I ever have the shroud out, it will become a two piece.....

Sounds like a potential problem with an imbalanced fan.
