Read that 4 GMCers left their lights on this year, (one of them twice;>),
and ran down their starting battery. Not only is this a hassle, it is real
hard on the batteries.
so was time to publish this easy, cheap, DIY , project.
If you can pull a fuse, you can do this project
- for $3,
- without wiring,
- no mods
- old or new GMC's.
- Never forget to turn off your headlights again
- so who says everything on a GMC is expensive?

the pdf file is easier to read, but the individual slides are easier to
print
good luck

Gene,
This is very cool, but how does it work? Why does the circuit complete when you turn off the engine?

The Sonalert is a polarity sensitive device that draws very little current. If the lights are on the Sonalert sees + voltage from the lights. If the key is also on then the Sonalert also sees + on the other side and nothing happens.
If you turn the key off, then + goes away on that side and the son-alert sees ground or minus through the accessories downstream of the fuse. If you turn the headlight off and the key is on then the Sonalert see 12 volts across it also but it is reverse voltage and the Sonalert does nothing.
This works great. I have used them for years as headlight alarms and turn signal alarms.
I have one across the oil pressure sender and master switch on my airplane. It tells me when I leave the master switch on and the engine is not running. It also doubles as a low oil pressure warning alarm. On an airplane the ignition key only shuts down the ignition. The master switch turns off all other electrical devices. I have left the master on a couple of times and run down the battery. I hate having to pull the prop to get the engine started to get back home again. I remember having to do it one time in the winter in lightly blowing snow while dressed in a business suit.
Do it. It is a simple add-on. Just make sure you test the alarm before installing it to be sure it is loud enough and at a frequency you can hear. My hearing has degraded enough that I can no longer hear the one I have on my turn signals. I need to replace it with a lower frequency one.
Radio Shack has several different versions available. Also:

Although I really don't care for gages on my GMC I do worry about oil pressure so when I hooked up my electric fuel pump through the oil pressure switch, I also hooked up a sonalert so if the oil pressure drops with ignition on, I know it right away.

WD0AFQ wrote on Thu, 15 December 2011 19:25 | It is a good cheap little mod to make. I did it about 5 years ago and it has saved my battery a few times, on rainy days. Also put a buzzer on the turn signals so I don't leave one on by accident. I hate getting behind some old goat driving with his left blinker on. If I did not have the Digi Panel I would do same thing on the oil pressure.

Bob, I also have a buzzer on my vdub blinkers because the stock flasher can not be heard. the grandkids are split on the noise. Some love it and some claim it is "annoying". Teri does not like either buzzer. I did quiten down the one in the GMC for her. She does not ride in the bug so I left it loud to be heard above the loud headers.
