I am looking into buying a set of scales suitable for weighing GMCs. There seem to be lots of them available but the prices are pretty steep. Another issue is the scale range should be accurate at our low-relative-to-trucks weight. Any suggestions? Know of any used ones for sale?

It is all in how much you want to spend. None of them are cheap. I have a pair of old mechanical ones that came from the Pennsylvania DOT. Newer digital ones would be nicer. I just missed a set of 4 digital ones that were being sold off by a city police department.

The closest you can read mine is about 25 pounds and it is difficult to see that needle width. The set that Alex Sirum has is mechanical and has a bigger read out so you can see the reading much better. Most drive over single wheel scales run up to 20,000 or 25,000 pounds.

With a little bit of effort you could build a set that maxed out at around 4,000 per wheel. You could use load cells for electronic ones or just a few hydraulic pistons under a plate with a pressure gauge for mechanical ones.

Maybe you could build some scales but if I did them they would have to be made of wood Laughing Have you looked for digital scales enough that you can suggest some?

G'day,

I sent the company the following:

Quote

Hi,

I would like to build a set of four scales to weigh GMC motorhomes. They have a gross weight of approximately 5000 lb on the two
front wheels and 7500 lb on the four tandem rear wheels.

To weigh them we would put one scale under each of the front wheels and take a weight. We would then remove them and put one scale
under each of the four rear wheels.

Would one of your 5000 lb load cell kits be feasible to use for this purpose?

Rob M.

Armand, I don't know how much you want to spend, but here are some on Ebay:

Carl, I have looked on ebay and craigslist (nationally) and there have been no working ones available. The ebay link you posted says the scale is 'for parts or not working'. The kit idea posted earlier sounds good if the rest of the components could be fabricated by someone who can cut and weld maybe? Rob's request for info could develop into some ideas.

G'day,

Got the following response:

Subject: Re: RV Scale

Dear Rob,

1. It would be easier to use our WWP wheel load scales. They are $2050 for a set of two scales.

http://www.scaleline.com/wwp_wheel_load_scale.htm

2. You could use (2) of the $395 kits but you would need to build the scale platform and the ramps.

Thank you,

Jim, borrowing Sirum's scales is a possibility but timing-wise their rallies are usually very close to ours. If we can't work something out we'll talk about it. Thanks.

Sorry Armand. I don't know how I missed that. There is another Ebay auction for working ones, at twice the price, and It's not clear if more than one is available:

Thanks, Carl - it looks like that ebay item has a couple of problems - we need two of them and they look pretty tall which would be a problem especially for the rear wheels. The ones Sirums have are really low profile so are easy to get up on.

I remember back in 1984, The Michalen people were at an International
convention.
One coach was trying to get on the scale with the front. The driver
gunned the engine and the tire grabbed the scale and hurdled it past a
guy and almost took his foot.
Rally back in those days were lively.
I had a Wallace hub and people wanted to see the cross section, so
Roland Wilber and I took one of mine to a shop and had it cut. Even
then, there were believers that a training wheel concept was good.
